Nothing he said suggested that they convicted him because they wanted to "get" Cheney.

It was Heavily inferred.

But you can "cooperate" and still have strange lapses of memory. It's also another argument for having the Justice Dept. GO AFTER all of these leakers and reporters, all the time.

"What was the crime before the investigation? The entire 'investigation' was a set up because there WAS no crime."

Ugh, the CIA demanded an investigation into the leaking of Plame's name to determine if a crime had been committed. That's why Fitzgerald got involved -- to investigate the matter. Libby committed obstruction of justice and perjury -- i.e. crimes -- when he lied to investigators. So, what Libby did was commit crimes to prevent the determination of whether the leaking of Plame's name was a crime. The CIA had to assert that Plame was covert in order for there to be an investigation in the first place. Got it?

> You figure it out.

In other words, it doesn't matter, but it lets you feel suitably outraged?

Utter crap.

So you think more than a third believe Libby is on trial for leaking or you believe that?

A fews days ago, the jury asked for clarification of the Cooper charge but didn't ask a question. They sent a note repeating the charge and Judge Walton wrote back that he didn't understand what they were asking him.

The jury then did a Gilda Radner "nevermind"

I looked it up. In Criminal cases it is called a directed verdict and not a Judgment notwithstanding the verdict. The judge can order an aquittal following a guilty verdict if he believes that the evidence did not justify the finding of guilt. The prosecution can appeal. A judge may not issue a guilty order following an aquittal or a hung jury, but he may issue a directed verdict of not-guilty.

Let us hope the judge sees through this travesty and does the right thing. But I'm not holding my breath.

From Publishers Weekly
This enormous, intimate blow-by-blow of Enron's implosion gets as close to what actually happened, in terms of people making (bad) decisions in real time, as anyone who wasn't there with a concealed video-phone possibly could. Having combed endless documents and interviewed countless principals and peripherals, Eichenwald (The Informant) presents short declarative sentences (and lots of sentence fragments) that may have run through the heads of men like top executives Skilling, Lay and Fastow as they managed to cook a very large set of books, as well as men like Stuart Zisman, a lawyer in the firm's wholesale division who wrote an early memo titled "Overall Book Manipulation" that stated "the majority of investments being introduced to Raptor are bad ones." Eichenwald's bald depictions ("Skilling sank deeper into depression"; "It couldn't be true, [Anderson partner Tom] Bauer thought") make for real tension. Collegial meetings at the White House with Dick Cheney, Colin Powell and others; charged conference calls with skeptical investors; endless buy-ins, buyouts and acronyms—all are presented in a rat-a-tat style thick with corporate anxiety, keeping pages turning even as the details themselves are numbing. (Luckily, Eichenwald includes a "Cast of Characters" and "List of Deals" so that readers can remind themselves of past carnage.) As an unadorned attempt to get into the heads of some major manipulators, this book can hardly be bettered. (On sale Mar. 8)

"the entire grand jury was a perjury trap. it wasn't investigating any actual crime once the facts regarding her status (not covert) were understood."

All Libby had to do was not lie and he could not have been convicted of perjury or obstruction of justice. Libby's crime was lying to investigators. Plame status was and is irrelevant to Libby's crimes.

The whole issue of whether leaking Plame's name was a crime or not wasn't even part of this trial. If that were the issue in this trial then the facts surrounding her status would have been relevant, but for the purposes of this trial, those facts are irrelevant and always will be irrelevant

Please provide a link documenting that information.
