This movie had german liberals walking out of the screening claiming it was pro-Bush propaganda. This means it's a movie worth seeing.

Thermopylae and the Peloponnesian War have long been subjects which the military analyzes in order to draw modern analogies. Even today in the Army War College, I am told, officers still read Thucydides.
As regards this movie, since it is based on a Frank Miller comic, it will probably be highly stylized. Frank Miller was the writer behind some of the better Batman comics (on which the recent reboot was based). It won't be historical, but it may be entertaining.

I'm having the same problem with Ghost Rider. Does the super-hero with the big flaming head symbolize John Edwards, and so its pro-Dem propaganda? [And does that kind of veiled analogy require someone to be sent to rehab?]
Or is his macho, tough, kill-'em-all attitude a sly criticism of Bush's war policy?
I think Ghost Rider actually sold his soul to the devil, so I guess you have to go with the Hollywood anti-Bush theme.

My husband got to see a sneak preview of it yesterday, and he came home RAVING about it. He said it great, but really graphic (and this is a Marine talking). He said the whole theater was cheering at some points, and that it was visually stunning to watch.
He loves Gladiator, LoTR, Kingdom of Heaven type movies, and he said this one is his new fave.

"unleashing an army on a small country guarded by fanatical guerilla fighters"
GUERILLA FIGHTERS????? WTF???? Taken from their mothers at the age of FIVE and trained for one thing and one thing alone for the entirety of their lives -- close-in, heavy infantry combat -- that was a Spartan. Nothing on Earth could possibly be farther from a "guerilla fighter".

"300" is about a small group of heros defending civilization and (at least according to the movie) democracy against barbarians and traitors.
Hence it refers to the US military and the Republican Party. Defending civilization against the onslaught of IslamoFascism and democrat party traitors.

Is George Bush Leonidas or Xerxes? one of them asked. These losers have one-track minds that are focused like a pedophiles. Everything "Bush" is a paraphilia for these freaks. They simply can't think of anything else.

Can someone help me out? I seem to recall TV ads for this a few months ago -- and I swear that there were Trolls (or something) involved in the fighting.
I know a thing or two about Thermopylae and I'm pretty sure there were no trolls at that battle. Was I seeing things? My fear at the time was that Hollywood had decided that the battle might be "too boring" without CGI monsters.

"Spartan king who would defend freedom at any cost"
He was defending perhaps the larger Hellenic culture, but Sparta itself was hardly a free society. It was Geriocentric, autocratic, had a caste system of slavery, was xenophobic, and was highly regimented. It had many practices that have more in common with North Korea than say, the United States.
That said, this is a "graphic novel" (comic book) version of events and has to be ruthlessly condensed and simplified. Here Spartans = good, persians = bad, Spartan king versus Persian Emperor.
