The CPAC I saw (Michelle Malkin shares her thoughts on Ann Coulter)

Enter Ann Coulter.

Her "faggot" joke was not just a distraction from all the good that was highlighted and represented at the conference. It was the equivalent of a rhetorical fragging--an intentionally-tossed verbal grenade that exploded in her own fellow ideological soldiers' tent.

There are countless conservatives who bring their children to CPAC. It's a family-friendly event. I brought mine last year and the year before. I met several parents with their kids there this year. We expect CPAC to be a place where conservative role models speak with clarity, passion, and integrity. There are enough spewers of mindless filth, vulgarity, and hatred on TV, at the movies, and in the public schools. We don't expect our children to be exposed to that garbage at the nation's preeminent conservative gathering.

I was in the back of the ballroom and did not see any children in the audience during Coulter's speech. But what if there had been?

Would you want your children hearing the word "faggot" spoken in such a casual and senseless manner? Would you like your first-grader or three-year-old running around the halls of CPAC singing "faggot, faggot, faggot?" Not me. Not anymore than I'd like my toddler singing "gook, gook, gook" or "sambo, sambo, sambo"--favored epithets hurled at conservative minorities by leftist haters groping around in their empty intellectual quivers. There were hundreds of young conservative college students in the ballroom. Would you be proud of your college-age daughter spewing such epithets in her campus debates with leftists?

With a single word, Coulter sullied the hard work of hundreds of CPAC participants and exhibitors and tarred the collective reputation of thousands of CPAC attendees. At a reception for college students held by the Young America's Foundation, I lambasted the substitution of stupid slurs for persuasion-- be it "faggot" from a conservative or "gook" from a liberal--and urged the young people there to conduct themselves at all times with dignity in their ideological battles on and off campus.

I made something else explicitly clear: Not all of us treat the communication of conservative ideals and ideas as 24/7 performance art. You can and should use humor to convey your message. You can enlighten and entertain--without becoming a tired old schtick. You can joke without becoming the joke.

No disrespect taken, but I am a human being, made from God's image. No where in my bible does it group me with the animals, except to give them over in subjection to me =)

If we do not stop, we will get Her Highness or BO and that would be the true social obliteration!

Right. Then it would not just be anxiously propitiating bloggers, it would be denunciations and forced recantations at Stalinist show trials.

the woman asks what the government is going to do

Considering the federal government has effectively destroyed the concept of personal responsibility and created an entire sub-culture of dependence and victimization, I'd say they've already done more than enough.

When we fight they win. They will use it, just wait. You will see all kinds of liberals, quoting MM, Hewitt and the rest. Demanding we disassociate from Ann. Let me ask you this..

When was the momentum in the war in Iraq lost? Wasn't it when the left successfully divided us? Abu Ghraib? Killing too many people in Fallujah?

Whatever the issue, each time we lost momentum. When they get us fighting among ourselves, that is energy we could be using against them or our enemies. That is why people like McCain are so dangerous.

The left is not like us. They are content with small victories. They move the ball a little at a time. Drip, drip, drip. Until what once was unthinkable is now the next logical step. Then, they make a large push. On morality issues the left never gives back ground. We do it all of the time.

Republicans are the Neville Chamberlain of American politics. They play hardball with Nerfs.

All I am saying is that there is a difference in using factual based & politically based retorts and then the personal non-factual 5th grader trash talk that Ann is throwing.

I LOVE it when Cheney dishes it to the liberals. He doesn't have to call them queers to do it however. I love it when Reagan used to rag on the liberals. He didn't have to call them names to do it either. If you want to see put downs of Edwards done right, look to the debate of Cheney vs. Edwards in 2004.

You can be devastating with a sense of class. Reagan showed us how.

You're comparing a satirist to elected statesmen. Two completely different animals.

Fighting? I'm not fighting. When they invited Ann to speak, they knew exactly who they were getting. I went stalking over at DUmmy UNderrock and there were many many postings about this. One person actually said something intelligent. He/she called it word association. Now ANYTIME someone hears the word FAGGOT, who will they think of? JOHN EDWARDS. Brilliant!!!

It wasn't all that long ago that everyone but us conservatives were offended because Dick Cheney told someone to go F**k himself. Do you remember? Yeah, he sure dished it out in a nice way. They did deserve his remark though.

In that regard, they're a lot like the Islamists. And I'm afraid we don't understand the first thing about either of them.

It would only be beneficial if we didn't keep making the same anthropomorphic fallacy by assuming that they were like us. We try to reason with them. Which is like trying to reason with a Boa Constrictor.

My comment was directed at ajolympian2004. He keeps positing these threads attacking Ann. I haven't read any of your posts that I disagree with.

He just posted a similar thread last night on the exact same subject. He hates Ann.

If your under 25, my son is a real Christian man. Good looking too, just like his Dad. ;)

The story being how Rudy is being warmly received by Conservatives.

It's a long way to the election and a lot is going to happen. Who could have predicted that John McCain would become almost a persona non grata with the MSM?

Now the Rockefeller Republicans are making a move but the socons (southern conservatives) who have ruled the roost suddenly have to think victory from the middle. This too will change.

Obviously Sam has a different sign up date then what's posted then.

No, the Freeper nom de guerre 'Sam Hill' has the correct sign-up date, but as the poet Patton once wrote:

...So as through a glass, and darkly

The age long strife I see

Where I fought in many guises,

Many names, -- but always me.

'Sam Hill' has fought the good fight on Free Republic since there were a mere handful of us here. There have been periods of coming and going, but he's always been 'him'.

There are a great many things that are obvious to those of us who were here from the beginning, but we don't expect late-comers like yourself to understand.

We are just usually amused...

As well they should. Homosexuality is a lifestyle choice, being black is not.

And if anyone would like to debate that point, they can start by explaining to the class why so many men are having sex in prison.

Anyway, she's badly hurt her career with this

I doubt it. Anyone who knows Ann Coulter knows what to expect, and that's what we love her for--the red meat. We don't ask our candidates to do that-- she's our designated hitter and she has a great slugging percentage. Opposing pitchers hate her but so what.

I went to her website last night to try to order one of her autographed books. I got to the home page OK but couldn't get onto the page to order her books, traffic was too heavy.
