The CPAC I saw (Michelle Malkin shares her thoughts on Ann Coulter)

Enter Ann Coulter.

Her "faggot" joke was not just a distraction from all the good that was highlighted and represented at the conference. It was the equivalent of a rhetorical fragging--an intentionally-tossed verbal grenade that exploded in her own fellow ideological soldiers' tent.

There are countless conservatives who bring their children to CPAC. It's a family-friendly event. I brought mine last year and the year before. I met several parents with their kids there this year. We expect CPAC to be a place where conservative role models speak with clarity, passion, and integrity. There are enough spewers of mindless filth, vulgarity, and hatred on TV, at the movies, and in the public schools. We don't expect our children to be exposed to that garbage at the nation's preeminent conservative gathering.

I was in the back of the ballroom and did not see any children in the audience during Coulter's speech. But what if there had been?

Would you want your children hearing the word "faggot" spoken in such a casual and senseless manner? Would you like your first-grader or three-year-old running around the halls of CPAC singing "faggot, faggot, faggot?" Not me. Not anymore than I'd like my toddler singing "gook, gook, gook" or "sambo, sambo, sambo"--favored epithets hurled at conservative minorities by leftist haters groping around in their empty intellectual quivers. There were hundreds of young conservative college students in the ballroom. Would you be proud of your college-age daughter spewing such epithets in her campus debates with leftists?

With a single word, Coulter sullied the hard work of hundreds of CPAC participants and exhibitors and tarred the collective reputation of thousands of CPAC attendees. At a reception for college students held by the Young America's Foundation, I lambasted the substitution of stupid slurs for persuasion-- be it "faggot" from a conservative or "gook" from a liberal--and urged the young people there to conduct themselves at all times with dignity in their ideological battles on and off campus.

I made something else explicitly clear: Not all of us treat the communication of conservative ideals and ideas as 24/7 performance art. You can and should use humor to convey your message. You can enlighten and entertain--without becoming a tired old schtick. You can joke without becoming the joke.

You are free to comment on Ann Coulter's remarks, pro and con. Any more personal (bleep) directed at other posters, and I'm ready to go medieval.

Yeah, right.

In other words, she thinks he's a faggot but cannot call him one because if she did she would have to go to rehab so she cannot say anything.

How thin can the veil be???

Your right and Ann needs a good spanking. I'm sure there are a few Freeper Men who would be willing to administer her punishment.

The term "faggot" is not offensive: it's what these people do to one another sexually is a far more offensive!

It's a cigarette for heaven's sake. LOL!

"Homosexuality is a sick, evil, degenerate lifestyle, and its practicioners don't reserve any respect at all. The use of the word "faggot" was mild. Malkin's over-the-top column just reveals that she has fallen for the lie that being homosexual is the same as being a member of a minority group."

However the three leading Republican candidates immediately distanced themselves from Ann's comment and even Ann herself clarified the context of her remark and I quote her:
"And of course, if you're working for a Republican candidate, you'll meet some nice heterosexual guys. By the way, before I let that slide, I do want to point out one thing that has been driving me crazy with the media, how they keep describing Mitt Romney's position as being "pro-gays, and that's going to upset right-wingers." Well, you know, screw you, I'm not anti-gay. We're against gay marriage. I don't want gays to be discriminated against. I mean, I think we have, in addition to blacks, I don't know why all gays aren't Republicans. I think we have the pro-gay position, which is anti-crime and for tax cuts. Gays make a lot of money, and they're victims of crime. I mean, the way -- no, they are. They should be with us. But the media portrays us. If they could get away with it, they would start saying, you know, "Mitt Romney, he's pro-civil rights, and that's going to upset conservatives."

Does those numbers represent the entire CPAC attendance or is it the registrants that voted in the Straw Poll? I think it is the straw poll participation.

The kind of parent that drags kids to a 'family friendly' event like CPAC is what keeps a lot of therapists at work for decades! Sheesh! "Hey kids, we're going to CPAC and see Duncan Hunter and Mitt Romney! And if you're really good we will stay for the panel on government finance!"

what in the WORLD are you talking about? it's a political conference! i had my jr high aged daughter come to CPAC with me about 4 or 5 years ago to hear Sam Donaldson v. Robt Novak. she is head and shoulders above her peers in political knowledge at her all girls prep school precisely because we have exposed her to things like this.

Another pic:

Bryan Preston, Michelle Malkin, and Ian Schwartz on Bloggers Row.

You may remember Ian Schwartz and his conservative video blog, 'Political Teen' and 'Expose The Left'. Ian moved onto to join Malkin's 'Hot Air'. Ian is now in college.

"You think we need a PC gestapo in the GOP?"

Spot on! I tried four or five formulations as a reply to the 'police ourselves' post. Couldn't come up with anything that said just what I wanted to communicate. You did though. Great post, well put!

Of course if an idiot dad brings his little daughter to a Rat campaign stop, proceeds to get harassed and the daughter's pro Bush sign ripped apart, the very suggestion that perhaps the whole idea wasn't so bright on the dad's part gets smacked down on FR. So which is it? Or is there an "anything that helps the RNC is acceptable parenting" escape clause?

You must also be shocked when you go to a hockey game and a fight breaks out.

I thought the phrase was "going to a fight and hockey match breaks out."

I'm just being a bit of a wisecare - Malkin's line was wide open for a wisecrack, that's all.

I was very interested in politics even at age 10 or 11, so I know kids can be turned on by politics. That being said, I do think most children would find the event a bore.

(With her comment Coulter raised one of the critical issues of our time)

So where does RAMPANT PC come in among Terrorism, Genocide, Poverty, Energy, Henger, Disease and the other "critical issues of our time".

No. Outside of Jesus, whom she considers her Savior.

Rampant PCism eliminates discussion about every issue. Race, Aids, Poverty, Abortion, 911, wishing a 100 year old man Happy Birthday... What isn't affected by PCism??
