Ronald Reagan had phenomenal personal charisma, executive experience as the governer of a large state, and the good fortune (after a manner of speaking) to follow Jimmy Carter into the White House.
Reagan had run in '76, too, you'll recall, and at that time he couldn't even beat FORD in the primaries.
If he hadn't had the great speaking ability and the provable executive experience, he might very well have lost to Carter in '80 as well, despite the clear principles.

After reading it, Giuliani was spot on on the entire first paragraph, matched word for word the second half of the first sentence in the second paragraph, and scored about 80% good on the remainder.
I've said repeatedly that Guiliani would be my third choice to be nominated.

Ok, I support Rudy. Because he'll kick terrorist ass, and ask questions later. That's my priority. Apparently, though, because I am able to overlook Rudy's socially liberal side in order to achieve the victory over terrorism, I myself am a Liberal. Imagine my surprise.
Of course, I am a Liberal who will vote for strict Conservative Duncan Hunter if he is nominated, and I am a Liberal who would love to see Tom Tancredo in the White House. I am a strange Liberal.
