HOLLYWOOD'S wealthy liberals can now avoid any guilt they might feel for consuming so much non-renewable fossil fuel... This year's Oscar goodie bag contained gift certificates representing 100,000 pounds of greenhouse gas reductions...
It reminds us of the era when rich Catholics paid the church for "dispensations" that would shorten their terms in Purgatory.

It seems unfair to pay for "extras"--there should only be one class of carbon credits!

Somebody else invests (supposedly) in a project that reduces emissions. They can take credit for what someone else has done by paying them.
No wonder it appeals to liberals.
I believe a few years ago, such a scheme was proposed by Republicans. A public utility could continue to run an older plant if it constructed a newer plant that not only met requirements, but exceeded it by the amount the old plant "poluted".
And the liberals went apeshit.

How much to nail Tanya Roberts without having to do more that a week in Purgatory? You know, she made a movie in 1989 called "Purgatory."

I think that I'll sell water credits. For each one that someone buys, I'll relieve myself in my backyard rather than use the toilet.

What type of paper are the credits printed on...? Carbon paper of course! Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.

Where can I get my "insensitive comment" credits? You already got 'em! Every insensitive comment (e.g. Obama's big ears, Hillary's "cankles," etc) you "sequester" here within the FreeRepublic domain give you the right to make one equivalent comment in the "real world". At least that's the way I've been doing it.

I could always simply increase the price...
I prefer to offer a carbon credit for every budget.

Now there'll have to be a crackdown on counterfeit carbon credits, which means more bureaucrats, bigger government, yadda yadda yadda

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Are free carbon credits taxable as income???? The Hollywood rich don't pay for thgeir fair share of carbon credits.

The certificate looks like a big cow. It offsets methane production from cattle poot. They only cost $25. I go me one.
