Poland: Russia Can't Be Serious About Polish Missile Defense System Installation
Warsaw, Poland 3 March 2007 The Russian's can't be serious about their objections to Poland installing part of the US missile defense system on Polish soil. The objections getting press are groundless and they know it. Russia is just playing games with the press. They are worried about something else.
The missile defense system uses missiles that attack incoming threats. It does not chase missiles that are outgoing. It impacts incoming missiles.
Russian missiles launched against the US would not be incoming for missiles in Poland.
So be it one or one hundred missiles in Poland, they physically would not be able to attack missiles launched at the US..
The missiles in Poland are not installed to protect the East Coast of the United States. The missiles in Alaska defend the United States.
The missiles in Poland will defend all of Europe and NATO assets in all of Europe.
Putting the missiles in the United Kingdom would not allow all of Europe to be defended against threats from the Middle East.
Poland was chosen because when missiles interceptors are launched from there all of Europe could be defended against missiles from the Middle East.
The threat to Europe is real.
"Iran has over 20 intermediate range missiles that can reach continental Europe," stated "These 20 BM-25 missiles were purchased from North Korea in 2005 and are a variant of the Soviet SS-N-6 (R-27) submarine-launched ballistic missile. With a range beyond 3,000 kilometers, these missiles pose a direct threat to central Europe." Riki Ellison, President of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance.
While some Russians are crying foul and making threats, others are more honest about the situation.
On March 2, Russian Air Force Commander in Chief Colonel General Vladimir Mikhailov said that the possible deployment of a U.S. radar site in the Caucasus is of no real concern to Russia, RIA Novosti and ITAR-TASS reported. "We have everything necessary in order to respond appropriately to such deployments. They have lots of money, so let them spend it," he said.
The daily "Kommersant" on March 2 summed up the Russian attitude towards the missile-defense project as "predictably hostile." The same paper reported on February 28 that First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov told the government's Military and Industrial Commission recently that Russia needs to set up its own defense system against aircraft, missiles, and space weapons. And can anyone seriously believe that even 100 interceptors could stop a Russian launch of its missiles? If the Russians really think that they could, then they have real problems.
It seems that we should give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they do have a good missile arsenal. So their concerns about 10 interceptors, or even 100, are manufactured for public consumption.
And the high level Russians who are complaining are surely are more technically competent or informed than they are showing in their anti-installation campaign. They have to be laughing about how the press spreads their disinformation and the people buy it.
The real objection is all about hegemony and shallow power. They just don't like not having Poland on its knees before the Russian might. With the US bases on Polish soil, Russia knows that the US will defend its bases, and in the process, Poland. And Poland will be simply out of Russia's sphere of influence.
A Poland free of fear of Russia is just not something Russia can emotionally handle.
Poland provides another reason for me to visit I want to make a visit. The leadership appear to be serious about security and independence. I have known some people who have been to Poland for business and leisure - all have said the same things: beautiful country and great people.
I am going to Warsaw on the 14th for two weeks. Anything interesting going on/worth doing? I have seen/done all of the regular stuff before.
Simple reason that Russia is pissed is that the incoming missiles from the Middle East are part of the Russian plan.
Russia has spent billions building the Islamics Nuclear weapons factorys. That is not an accident either.
The Polish Missile Defense system only consists of a VERY large slingshot. Why are the Russians so mad?
By liberal rules I can only say that because I'm Polish.
