Very interesting factors in this story. Here's another snip, regarding possible reasons for expelling the black indians
SNIP...Advocates of expelling the freedmen call it a matter of safeguarding tribal resources, which include a $350 million annual budget from federal and tribal revenue, and Cherokees' share of a gambling industry that, for U.S. tribes overall, takes in $22 billion a year. The grass-roots campaign for expulsion has given heavy play to warnings that keeping freedmen in the Cherokee Nation could encourage thousands more to sign up for a slice of the tribal pie.
"Don't get taken advantage of by these people. They will suck you dry," Darren Buzzard, an advocate of expelling the freedmen, wrote last summer in a widely circulated e-mail denounced by freedmen. "Don't let black freedmen back you into a corner. PROTECT CHEROKEE CULTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN. FOR OUR DAUGHTER[S] . . . FIGHT AGAINST THE INFILTRATION."
End of SNIP

Yes - the indians had slaves and were slave owners and slave traders. Some they bought and some they captured. The slaves were black, white and other indians.
And now they want to kick out the descendants for not being "indian enough"
This should be fun to watch. Which PC group will give in first...

It's a basic, inherent right to determine our own citizenry.
Does that apply to Americans, too?

It would be nice if the USA would adopt that principle, and start expelling people whose ideology includes killing us.

Nice, I guess that this is the way of increasing their profit share huh?

Sounds like they're taking lessons from Mr Farrakhan and La Raza.

Where I grew up, in northwestern NC, nearly all people, black or white, had documented or legendary Cherokee ancestry. It's a shame that it sounds so much like old-school segregationist talk, but I suspect there's an attempted money-grab going on behind the scenes. They're within their rights to determine who belongs to their tribe and nation, regardless of how it sounds to us, or what we think, imho.

I'm part Cherokee, although through marriage and not slavery. I had been under the impression that one need only have a certain percentage of heritage to be considered a tribal member...this seems to imply 100% pure blood is required...or am I misreading this?

The 250,000-member Cherokee Nation will vote in a special election today whether to override a 141-year-old treaty... Suddenly they don't have a problem with a broken treaty?

It's interesting because I've got a book published in the 1880's with hundred's of photographs from the Civil War. What is interesting, in the "veterans" section, there is a large plate showing "Cherokee Confederate Veterans" meeting under a very conspicuous "Bonny Blue Cross", Lee's flag.

A joke comes to mind...something about them being tired of looking at those guys and being reminded of their ancestors' long-ago liaisons with bison...but no, it would be wrong.

These are desperate times. If the Cherokee Nation can't reduce their numbers they're going to have to assimilate into society, get jobs and all those other unpleasant things us Non-Hyphenated-Americans have to do.
