"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot, so I so kind of an impasse, cant really talk about Edwards," Ann Coulter said today at CPAC. Her audience seemed to to evince both shock and delight.
The Human Rights Campaign's Joe Solomnese was not happy.
To interject this word into American political discourse is a vile and disgusting way to sink the debate to a new, all-time low. Make no doubt about it, these remarks go directly against what our Founding Fathers intended and have no place on the schoolyard, much less our countrys political arena.
Next, there'll be calls for Republican candidates to disassociate themselves from Coulter's remarks. Unfairly, ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney faces the biggest burden: he spoke right before Coulter and praised her... not knowing what she planned to say.
Text of the First Ammendement: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Text of the Second Ammendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The only time the phrase "shall not be infringed" is used is in the Second Ammendment.
Priceless!
I read everything on this thread and marvel at the comments.
Ann lives in the beltway world and knows exactly what it takes to get under their thin skin.
Sometimes crude and rude is what it takes.
Indeed, wasn't it Thomas Jefferson who was part of a group that support hanging for sodomites? Sounds as if the quote was too polite then!
I remember that video - and how long it was.
Is that a pic of you with Pres. Bush?
It's been rumored it takes Johnny twice a long as a Playboy Bunny to put on makeup for personal appearances.....and Johnny doesn't have to apply makeup to his cleavage (I don't think?).
The second "g" is optional in Canada. ;-)
"it was a blown joke!!! "
Given the context, that turn of phrase could cause more problems.
John Edwards is a very effeminate man, so what? Why are all the PC goons out in force on the left and right over a statement of fact?
True. I suspect that our founding fathers would have used more "colorful" terminology, right before brainstorming suitable ways of purging the population of the unacceptable perversion by enacting laws with sufficient consequences to serve as a deterant for such abhorent behavior, or at least keep it behind closed doors where it belongs.
I think "faggot" only pertains to homosexuals of the male persuasion.
Oh my God, it just occurred to me the opportunity Ann missed/ she could have woven in a tit for tat, and claimed that Edwards was "fair game", just as Edwards' disgusting and thuggish wife did when she and the Kerry campaign just couldn't seem to leave Mary Cheney alone in her lesbian-ness/ Ann I am sure said something about this THEN, but it would have made a nice historical update if she had mentioned it NOW, as a way of tying all this kind of rhetoric together.
A much larger problem is how Americans restrain themselves when plain truth is stifled for manners' sake.
People can't even say "bad" anymore. They giggle and drool, "That's not good!" More than colloquialism, it is actually straight cowardice.
The absurdity is approaching Orwellian levels. Even the First Amendment was degraded in the liberal response, by denying the intent of our "founding fathers" to protect Coulter's statement.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
There was a time when wit, politics, and biting personal remarks were all the rage. In this context, Edwards would not be viewed as "too good" to respond -- he would only be seen as incapable of it.
To the truly enlightened, it is so greatly amusing that a "classless girl" is now picking on a grown man within the public forum - and he is taking it.
Why are all the PC goons out in force on the left and right over a statement of fact?
Call a fag a fag. It's liberating.
No, can't do that... must impress friends with "tolerance"... my kids might actually learn something too...
Conversations require listening carefully to the other side and making considered judgements. Calling someone a "faggot" isn't a considered judgement - it's juvenile and does nothing to advance my beliefs or political goals. My political goals aren't to "irritate" my political opponents but rather, I hope, to convince them of the rightness of my beliefs. Namecalling virtually never helps.
