I have no idea if it benefits society, nor do you, that is yet to be seen in the big picture of things.

Additionally, not everything needs to benefit society. Some things need to shake society to it's very foundations. Excuse me for pointing out the obvious, but an on-going conservation which involves large issues sometimes gets testy, and well it should.

Degrades political debate? Where have you been? Political debate has been historically and is now a verbal contact sport. And, governance is not supposed to be easy. If it were, we would not be having a discussion.

So, go Ann. Shake em' up, irritate em' and more power to her. Those that can't take the heat should get out of the kitchen.

Conversations require listening carefully to the other side and making considered judgements. Calling someone a "faggot" isn't a considered judgement - it's juvenile and does nothing to advance my beliefs or political goals. My political goals aren't to "irritate" my political opponents but rather, I hope, to convince them of the rightness of my beliefs. Namecalling virtually never helps.
