Question: "What do you think of Governor Romney's candidacy for the presidency?"
Ann's reply:
"I think he's probably our best candidate."
"I think it is fair to say, and this is coming from someone who supported Pete DuPont, Alan Keyes, Pat Buchanan, Steve Forbes so it's not like I won't go for an underdog."
"But I think we have to be serious about this. I think our choice is among Gingrich, Giuliani, McCain, and Romney.
And Giuliani is very very liberal and when this country gets to the point (and I have a love letter to him in my current book, Godless, what he did for New York was magnificent) but when this country gets to the point where both presidential candidates support abortion, I think we can hang it up as a country."
And McCain, I think has some problems because everyone who supports McCain would have to switch party registrations to vote for him."
"I love Gingrich, I think he's brilliant, he was crucial, the man for his time. We don't even know if he's running for president but assuming he is, I kinda think his time has passed and, I don't know, it could come back again, like Eighties music, but I think his time was over..."
"...And you have to say about Romney, he tricked liberals into voting for him." (laughter)
"I like a guy who hoodwinks liberals so easily. And also the one thing I have a very soft spot for is that I love Mormons and the reason I love Mormons (among other things) is that...you may have forgotten this...But Bill Clinton in Utah in 1992 came in third (in Utah). Now that's a fine state."
"You know, people keep saying, criticizing some of our presidential candidates, saying 'well, they're not Reagan, they're not Reagan.'"
"A Reagan comes around once every hundred years so don't keep comparing everyone to Reagan. It's a very tough job to run for president."
"I was just saying, the only thing I don't understand about Romney is why he wants to run for president. He has a great life, he's rich, he has a beautiful family...why ruin it by running for president?"
"But hopefully, he won't think of that."
I am sorry, but went back to Spartanburg news sites and couldn't find it! Did find articles about McCain with 164. Sorry I didn't post the link to begin with!
If you think Rudy is honest, do a google sometime on his close friends Ray Harding and Bernie Kerick.
I'm for Mitt but I won't trash Rudy.
But I root for the Mets and the Yankees, so it's understandable.
Thank you, Thank you.
I don't want Guiliani or Romney. I could go with Hunter, Brownback, Huckabee or Gingrich.
Anyone on this thread attending CPAC? I had hoped to meet some FR members but they have no booth in the exhibit hall! First time I remember that being the case. Very surprising.
Great event but if they are going to have so many thousands of people attend, they need to go to the convention center.
Thank you, thank you.
John McCain: 164
Rudy Giuliani: 162
Duncan Hunter: 158
Sam Brownback: 85
Mitt Romney: 80
Mike Huckabee: 21

Now, if only all the conservatives would wise up and unite behind the one conservative who can beat Hillary -- Mitt Romney -- the numbers would look this:
Romney: 344
McCain: 164
Giuliani: 162
I think it may be a waste of Prilosec to be for anyone yet. I would like to see Newt get into it, or some other successful conservative, in order to move the debate in a conservative direction. I am, however, against any and all RINOS. I'm not going to vote for a RINO, Hilary or no Hilary.
There's no rush to pick one. Primary is a year off.
Well, she was for Hunter. Now she's not.
So what do you mean?

Here's some more reaction to Mitt's speech at CPAC from Kathryn Jean Lopez at NRO:
The TurnaroundView a video of a crowd of Mitt supporters at CPAC after the speech.Romney's addressing CPAC now and oh boy is this different than the disappointing speech he gave in late January at the NRI conservative summit. A few red-meat lines: "It's time to take government apart and put it back together." Wants to make it "simpler, smarter, and smaller." He said, "I will fight to repeal McCain-Feingold." Talking about the marriage fight he said "It is the people who are sovereign in America, not a few folks in black robes." He talks confidently about the war and has a good line about how Pelosi and Reid shouldn't be dictating frontline strategy. He's gotten a ton of applause and has kept a steady beat. This is a speech ending on a forceful, adamant, ticked-off but optimistic about the future note. "Our traditional values" are on the line, we're under attack, and the government is a mess and he's not going to stand for it, dammit.
This is the speech he should have given in January at our summit. This is the speech he should have given when he launched the campaign. This speech this is a rallying speech.
Has anyone heard of Duncan Hunter?
It's pathetic that Sean Hannity and Michael -- both Christians -- can't come to the same conclusion and oppose this pro-abortion, pro-homosexual liberal.
She probably said it because Mitt is our best realistic candidate from a conservative POV. She defined the 'realistic' set as Gingrich, Guliani, McCain, and Romney.
Her reasoning is sound. You can go for an electable non-conservative (Rudy) or a non-electable conservative (Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, etc.). Mitt at the intersection of sufficient conservativeness and sufficient electability.
