I was speaking more as a general principle, not necessarily about some of the freakier posters on FR (and other forums). I think you're right about the kookiest 2%+ of that mindset, but most of them aren't notably harmful. I think they think they want is for the best. They're just lacking in an appreciation of human nature. In fact, they are just wrong.

I'm just talking about the ones who are posting now. If they are the kookiest 2% - then we are on the same wavelength. I know there are ideologues here who are nice people. I am talking about the haters and the ragers - those who stalk Rudy threads in order to attack and spew their venom. They are the ones who are alientating good and decent, kind and intelligent people from ever considering conservatism.

You don't have to support anybody until you're ready; just don't lurk and let this forum go down the tubes.

All those G. D. Rinos. How devious of them to pretend to be conservatives for DECADES just to foist liberals off on the Party.

We were all programmed by Karl Rove.

The really devious part was when all of us 'bots were programmed to vote for Ronald Reagan.

A post onyx made was printed in an MSNBC article, so it's clear the media is still reading here.

Imagine my surprise this morning......lol. Thankfully, I didn't make my usual typos. :0)

That's the problem in a nutshell. Principles are not about "winning".

And there is no doubt whatsoever that the major driver behind supporting Rudy is because we got smacked in 2006 and people want to win again. At any cost.

Thanks for not getting upset with my characterization of that phone call, because it has struck me for a long time as, "There, that'll hold 'em for another year."

THere are some who argue that the type of voter that comes out to vote for Rudy might well vote democrat down-ticket.

The beauty of the Rove strategy was that, if the President won, it meant a lot of true republicans came out to vote, and it helped the down-ticket races. If your appeal is to the center, you might draw people who would vote against true conservatives.

The kind of person who is excited to show up for a pro-defense pro-abortion president might not vote for a strong pro-life pro-2nd-amendment congressman.

You think that many GOPers are unprincipled? Where's your evidence for that?

I do. I submit as my evidence the United States Congress from 2000-2006. The Farm Bill, CFR, prescription drug benefits - all of these and more were passed by a Republican Congress and signed into law under the pen of a Republican President.

We allow our incomes to be squandered and our rights to be stripped, yet we keep coming back. The height of stupidity is to try the same thing over and over and expect a different result. As for me, I'm going to try something shockingly different this time by not bending any farther to the left. No candidate named Giuliani or McCain need worry about getting a vote from my household. All others are open to negotiation.

"Even Rudy haters can't lie about his intelligence." You VASTLY underestimate them. They can and will.

Rudy is hands down the most intelligent candidate.

I cannot believe they posted that about McCain. The draft dodging photo -- wouldn't affect me as I know a lot of people that got draft deferrments -- didn't know many college students that didn't use them and went on to grad school. That wasn't draft dodging no matter how many times they say it. There was a law that permitted deferrments -- draft dodgers went to Canada and elsewhere.

Been around the Air Force years and have met some really neat people and have met some Clymers all wearing the uniform. The ones that criticized people for getting a deferrment for the most part are the ones that were Clymers to everyone around and horrible to work for. Classy people don't criticize someone for taking advantage of a program that was available. Just because someone wears the uniform doesn't make them the best leader. I respect the uniform as much as anyone but I don't always respect the person who wore it at the time or 20-30 years later.

I agree. I have been prompted to ask just what is particularly conservative about a particular topic and position I find on a FR thread. Evolution is one. Divorce law is another. This comes up on sex & relationship threads, too.

I think basically we're on the same page here. Great posts!

I'm finding the ugliness is driving me from even participating... what happened to discussion? ie: Classical debate which emphasizes logic....

What has been going on here, as Rudy rises in the polls, is far from logical discussion. I'm appalled that some are so anxious to tear down a candidate that they don't care that the MSM is sitting back eating popcorn and enjoying watching the maligned FR eat our own.

You sure don't mind jumping to a lot of conclusions, do you.

It isn't much of a leap when the evidence is right in front of you for all to see.
