All day today we are covering speakers and panels at the 34th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, DC. This morning, we'll hear from Republican presidential hopeful former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He will be followed by Reps. Scott Garrett (NJ), Tom Tancredo (CO), and others.

Actually I'd prefer if he told the truth...or at least make up one story and stick to it.
He didn't read from the notes by any stretch. He just used them as a reminder of which point to make next.
He never actually read from his notes, he glanced at them in the beginning of his speech a few times. Once he found his zone, he went from there... by the way Peach I didnt get a chance to say you did an incredible job for those who weren't able to watch.
Oh please. Now you're just making stuff up. 90% of the divorced people in this country would scoff at your remark.
I agree 100 percent with your assessments.
Just remember, this is a very small but vocal group.
In the real world, people aren't acting this way at all.
Not even at CPAC.
No problem. I wasn't offended, I just wanted to make sure to explain myself better so you'd know what i meant.
The polls aren't meaningless, they tell us what people at FR are thinking. Since I was responding to a claim that a majority of people on FR supported Rudy, I thought it would be appropriate to site the FR poll.
Giuliani has stood in the direct fire of the worst of the media, the NY media, he has the same ability in handling it as did Reagan. No other politician around has that ability.
Any attempt by them to equate him with the Christian Right or right wing extremism would be laughed off the stage by everyone.
I watched Romney last night and was not the slightest impressed and was rather nauseated by having his wife preceed him. Lovely woman but I was just too aware of the artificiality of it all. Almost Gorelike. He is an attractive man and good speaker but I don't believe he will inspire sufficient enthusiasm to get the nomination.
There is no doubt that the electorate overvalues slickness and rarely sees through artificiality but Romney for me was too packaged. He has an enormous advantage on Rudy though, a head of hair.
It appeared to me that Hunter was put in a very disadvantageous position in having to appear first and early before the full crowd was there or awake. His speech was not too good but I don't think he should be judged on just it. He did say some good things. But I don't think it a fair representation of his ability.
Of course, I also do not believe he can compare with Rudy in that regard in any case. His speech was excellent and I had the feeling that the crowd could have listened as long as wished to talk. Great storytellers and communicators have that ability. That doesn't mean they will vote for him either.
There really was NO comparison in the presentations. Or doubt who is going to be the nominee. That was just made clearer.
There is a huge difference between a candidate "social conservatives can be fully comfortable voting vote" and a candidate they WON'T vote for.
In almost any election we are not fully comfortable voting for the candidate. Only RR, and the Bushes have I been "fully" comfortable voting for.
However, I have ALWAYS been fully comfortable voting against the Democrat candidate. NEVER a qualm.
Oh, the media in general won't even attempt to tie Guiliani, to the Christian right. Most of them are not THAT stupid. They'll kill Guiliani with all his weird personal baggage.
Lisssthp and all.
"On the other hand, if a 'Hunter wins' unites FR, while a 'Rudy wins' divides us in half, doesn't that suggest that Hunter is the better choice?" Only if you equate the unity of FR with the best course for the conservative ideas. While I believe this site has become the most powerful tool in the fight against the Party of Treason/Treason Media I do not believe that it will be well served if it becomes the home only of the most extreme Right thought.
There have been supporters of Rudy emerge from WELL respected and well known conservative institutions and individuals. His enemies here have branded them "sellouts", "traitors", "RINOS" blah, blah. These "sellouts" have been some of the heroes of the very people now attacking them. Is this sensible?
You know as well as I do that the nominee for any party cannot be supported ONLY by the extremes of the political spectrum. HOW is a Duncan, or Ron or Tom going to get elected by appealing to those NOT of the far Right (i.e. 70-80% of the electorate) when the voters believe they stand for the very things which frighten them away?
It is also important to note that many of those supporting Rudy, particularly the hatefully labelled "Mean Girls", are precisely the same people who have been MOST significant in keeping FR attention on the IMPORTANT issues we are facing: the War, the attacks on the President's policy, the Democrat LIES, the media shenannigans like Abu Ghrab, Libby, events in Congress. These people are responsible for adding tremendous content and analytical ability to this site.
If all that is left here is the fanatic, the oddball, and the quirky the site won't be what it was and can remain. My belief is the most important task of the Soros schemers is to destroy Free Republic and that the way to do that is to drive away decent, smart and dedicated people.
The Constitution explicitly empowers Congress to regulate federal elections as to time, MANNER, and place. How those elections are run includes campaign matters (Manner).
While I do not believe MF to be of much use it is within Congress' powers to write it. It is also useless and has done NOTHING but constrain the parties and unions a bit.
Clearly 2004 showed that any message could be gotten out unless it was one from an idiot and personally I hear enough from them anyway.
No individual's free speech rights were impaired. Have you read the law?
Last time I looked at the Rudy vs Hillary poll here 70% would vote for him.
Rudy had notes. I saw him referring to them on a couple of occasions. Probably just a list of subjects. But there is no doubt he is a wonderful extemporaneous speaker one of those who can go on for hours and likes the sound of their own voice.
That won't work either. Not when the Wicked Witch of the West is going to be the opponent.
But the issue is still who can beat him and I see no one even close to getting close.
Don't pretend he is not interesting to listen to.
But they will go after Rudy and yes it is going to work.
Well I say yes you say no so that goes nowhere.
As to the media and Hillary. There is no doubt that its complicity has not prevented her from having far higher negatives than any one else so it ain't working too great.
But thank you for the civil exchange! : )
