Duncan Hunter Surprises Pundits In South Carolina Straw Poll
Rick Amato Show ^ | 3/2/07 | Rick Amato

Posted on 03/02/2007 6:41:14 AM PST by pissant

The FOX television talking heads were gushing over the usual suspects- Mitt Romney, Rudy Gulliani and John McCain- when the results of the South Carolina Republican straw poll rolled in and left the pundits stuttering and speechless in mid sentence.

In a surprise result not predicted by any of the national political commentators, California Congressman Duncan Hunterfinished second with 110 votes behind Rudy Gulliani's 123 votes with 71 of the 75 precincts reporting.

Arizona Sen. John McCain was third with 86 votes, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 59 votes, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback had 68 votes, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the front-runners with 18 votes.

The underdog Hunter has now taken first in an Arizona straw poll and second in the South Carolina.

The charm of Duncan Hunter is that he is authentic. In a world of hyper-branding and packaging... where politicial speeches sound as if they are the result of focus group studies... Hunter comes across as unscripted, unrehearsed and firm in his beliefs.

...And do not dismiss his unwavering support for Border Patrol Agents Ramos & Compeon. It is the stuff that resonates with people.

As I wrote in The Washington Times back in November, Hunter has a message that connects with republican voters...particularly those in early primary states such as Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire. His message is one of peace through strength, conservative social values and conservative illegal immigration policy.

It's not hard to observe that the support for Hunter is strong among those who support him. They almost seem desperate to support him.

Considering that the other candidates are garbage, I'd say that is a fair assesment.

pro-Duncan lobbiests here on FR have done nothing but tear down a number of viable GOP Candidates.

viable GOP Candidates

Hillary clones do not qualify as viable GOP candidates.

Hunter's protectionist agenda will definitely bring in blue collar Democrats, but that doesn't make his protectionism a good thing.

Got you Bucannon paint brush out already I see.

It was an EMERGENCY because Schiavo was being starved to death. Only one of the most important pro-life votes in that session of Congress. What was Hunter doing?

He was three thousand miles away. I suppose his hyperspace machine was in the shop.

Rudy supporters have not been vicious at all towards ANY candidate

Go take a gander at some Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo threads and get back to me.

If we vote for a man, Hunter will win. Simple as that. A debate between Hillary or Ears Obama and Hunter would be a massacre.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Well Like you I have been balancing the RINO rush to judgement on Giuliani.

None of the RINO candidates like grass roots support or momentum. The RINOs are counting on McCain /Feingold restriction of political freedom of speech to stymy grass roots electioneering.

I have a feeling that you and I along with many others are here to make sure that grass roots politics is not stymied.

The Roody Rotorooter RIONOs seem to plug into the MSM instead of grass roots democratism based on THE MAN!

We do ourselves great honor and self empowerment by distinuishing ourselves from them. And that will empower conservative candidates with grass roots appeal, which is what democracy is all about.

Keep up the fine work Pissant. Your work is more valuable than many wish to acknowledge.

The thing that troubles me is that supporters of other candidates for the Republican nomination seem to be saying that they'll support the eventual nominee, whomever that might be. Many, if not most, Hunter supporters have your attitude.

We'll see in July of next year, when we know who the nominee is, whether a substantial portion of conservatives are vowing to stay home in November.

I hope that's not the case, but I fear it might be.

Well it is probably a safe bet that he was not dancing in drag at a gay convention.

He wasn't voting to help save the life of Schiavo either.

He was just a plane ride away. He decided to stay parked while Schiavo was being starved to death. Got ya.

"I think they got 500 or less political junkies like us to come out and cast a meaningless vote in order to write a news story. If it means more than that, I'm willing to be educated."

Let me educate you please.

This means unequivocally that Rudy could be elected mayor of Spartanburg and Duncan could lead the city council.

the word is getting out to the public

It is now. The more his name hits the MSM the better known he will be and the better he will do. Lots of time until Feb '08. Might be interesting.

I guess you don't travel much and don't have a concept of the time it takes to travel from California to DC. There's even direct flights!

People here should support their candidate, no matter who it is, by focusing solely on their candidate's positions, and not by attacking another GOP candidate in the race.

Which is what you've been doing with Hunter since before he officially announced. You've really gone off the deep end this time. First, you attack Hunter for his wardrobe. Next it was because he looks like Tom Delay. Now it's because he didn't save Terri Schiavo.

If this is all you've got, you may as well stop now. You're only making yourself look foolish.

Actually it was he looks like Tom Delay FIRST, then his sloppy appearance and yes, now the fact that he couldn't find the time of day to go vote for the Schiavo bill.

He's still riding that snail however.
