Duncan Hunter Surprises Pundits In South Carolina Straw Poll
Rick Amato Show ^ | 3/2/07 | Rick Amato

Posted on 03/02/2007 6:41:14 AM PST by pissant

The FOX television talking heads were gushing over the usual suspects- Mitt Romney, Rudy Gulliani and John McCain- when the results of the South Carolina Republican straw poll rolled in and left the pundits stuttering and speechless in mid sentence.

In a surprise result not predicted by any of the national political commentators, California Congressman Duncan Hunterfinished second with 110 votes behind Rudy Gulliani's 123 votes with 71 of the 75 precincts reporting.

Arizona Sen. John McCain was third with 86 votes, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 59 votes, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback had 68 votes, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the front-runners with 18 votes.

The underdog Hunter has now taken first in an Arizona straw poll and second in the South Carolina.

The charm of Duncan Hunter is that he is authentic. In a world of hyper-branding and packaging... where politicial speeches sound as if they are the result of focus group studies... Hunter comes across as unscripted, unrehearsed and firm in his beliefs.

...And do not dismiss his unwavering support for Border Patrol Agents Ramos & Compeon. It is the stuff that resonates with people.

As I wrote in The Washington Times back in November, Hunter has a message that connects with republican voters...particularly those in early primary states such as Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire. His message is one of peace through strength, conservative social values and conservative illegal immigration policy.

This is what I'm saying. He *could* clean it up, but I have nothing to lead me to believe he *would* clean it up.

But Duncan has two grass root polls notched into his gun stock! Rudy, Zero.

I must have misread. I thought this story said Rudy won this poll.

It concerns me that if Giuliani wins, the terrorists will have pictures of the leader of the free world dressed as a woman and marching with perverts.

Strange thing is, most of the people spouting it wanted Terri to be murdered anyway.

There is no reason, at this early in the process, to be snubbing the best conservative in the race! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

yadayadayada>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Why do you Rudy Rotorooters all want pre-primary assurances that Rudy be the pre-annointed best man? Last I knew, a nomninee has to earn that designation. Oh Ye of little faith, bow down to Rudy and let democratic republicanism languish?

Buahahahahahahahah!

The game is afoot.

May the best MAN win.

Using your logic one could conclude Hunter wanted her to be murdered by not even voting?

Hunter was the only one not to use funds to directly campaign for this straw poll.

He didn't have to. He had Spartanburg's textile billionaire protectionist Roger Milliken to help out (since Milliken didn't have Ralph Nader to support this year).

Rudy supporters have not been vicious at all towards ANY candidate.......................

I dunno where you been, but that is just untrue. Two and a half weeks ago the Roody Rotorooters began a campaign here on FR. They wanted pre-primary race assurances that Rudy would NOT be abandoned by conservatives should he win the nomination.

We conservatives basically said: " Lets get it on, may the best MAN win.

Now I don't cotton to MSM annointed candidates who have a liberal policy record on current conservative issues, and if you Roody Rotirooters want to declare a victory for Rudy at the oputset to demoralize conservative Pubbies, you are wasting your time.

This Republican presidential nomination race will be a real battle, and so, LETS GET IT ON! You will get no preassurances like you seem to want from conservative Republicans. No one in Conservative Repulicandom is going to pre-annoint Rudy like the MSM is doing.

And after its over? Lets see who wins and how he or she did it. Then I'll tell you how I'll vote in the election.

I think the fact that Hunter won the Arizona straw poll is pretty telling. One would think that the local boy would win a straw poll in his own state.

Remember, if Al Gore had won his home state he would have become President. (Thankfully for us even his own state rejected him)
