Duncan Hunter Surprises Pundits In South Carolina Straw Poll
Rick Amato Show ^ | 3/2/07 | Rick Amato

Posted on 03/02/2007 6:41:14 AM PST by pissant

The FOX television talking heads were gushing over the usual suspects- Mitt Romney, Rudy Gulliani and John McCain- when the results of the South Carolina Republican straw poll rolled in and left the pundits stuttering and speechless in mid sentence.

In a surprise result not predicted by any of the national political commentators, California Congressman Duncan Hunterfinished second with 110 votes behind Rudy Gulliani's 123 votes with 71 of the 75 precincts reporting.

Arizona Sen. John McCain was third with 86 votes, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 59 votes, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback had 68 votes, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the front-runners with 18 votes.

The underdog Hunter has now taken first in an Arizona straw poll and second in the South Carolina.

The charm of Duncan Hunter is that he is authentic. In a world of hyper-branding and packaging... where politicial speeches sound as if they are the result of focus group studies... Hunter comes across as unscripted, unrehearsed and firm in his beliefs.

...And do not dismiss his unwavering support for Border Patrol Agents Ramos & Compeon. It is the stuff that resonates with people.

As I wrote in The Washington Times back in November, Hunter has a message that connects with republican voters...particularly those in early primary states such as Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire. His message is one of peace through strength, conservative social values and conservative illegal immigration policy.

C'mon, Registered made a gentle spoof of the fact that Duncan is a long shot. Big deal. That's the harshest (only?) criticism I've seen here at FR of Duncan, and you guys get all upset.

Rudy supporters have not been vicious at all towards ANY candidate... can you say the same of the anti-Rudy crowd? Some of the WORST destructive spewing I've ever seen here.

Pissant, you've dressed up a vanity as a conventional thread. Couldn't you find an article anywhere that mentioned DH's triumphant 2d place in Spartanburg, home of Milliken, DH's big protectionist supporter?

Good job, go Hunter! Good also to see illegal alien enabler Huckaby at the bottom.

I grabbed it of a talk show host's website. Next time I'll be sure it comes form the MSM, since they seem to have more legitimacy to you.

Registered, I appreciate your concern but your perspective is flawed. I am one who is opposed to Rudy. I don't oppose him because he is a flawed human being--we all are. I am opposed to him because he is at odds with a great deal of the GOP platform. I don't set out to destroy his candidacy, only to expose his stance on issues and to question why the Rudy supporters are demanding we support Rudy McRomney as the only alternative to the Hildebeast. Many of them have stated that they agree with Duncan Hunter more but are going with the three celebrities for political expediency.

My venom is directed at those who compromise their principles so early in the race. There is a conservative out there that we can support. This conservative that you have labeled as "going nowhere" by your cartoon has come in the top two of two straw polls. I would have to say that he has a significant chance if the grass-roots are already so excited about a candidate who is having to do his own campaigning.

Just saw an updated story that said the vote count had been suspended last night because of the bad weather. It's been resumed this morning. They're not going to announce the final results until this afternoon, but apparently McCain has surged and they're saying it's a Giuliani-Hunter-McCain dead heat.

People here should support their candidate, no matter who it is, by focusing solely on their candidate's positions, and not by attacking another GOP candidate in the race.

Which is to say you don't support debating the veracity of information posted about a candidate or criticizing those stances or actions with which one disagrees.

Sorry, but you're just plain nuts. This is a DISCUSSION forum. Not a series of pep rallies. You can't spell discussion without "dis".

Most people (inluding this FReeper) are undecided at this point, and there is a great deal of ambiguity and misinformation out there. To criticize those who disseminate factual information and debate the positives and negatives of candidates is just .... absurd.

LMAO when I woke up and saw that. But remember: Hunter has no chance, because an anti-1st amendment gun-grabbin' Margaret Sanger supportin' illegal alien protectin' gay marraige supportin' partial birth abortion acceptin' conservative(?) is the best pick for POTUS.

Great news. As I recall North Carolina gave a big boost to RR's presidency and now maybe SC will do it for Hunter.

For Hunter to be in the top tier with candidates that have national name recognition for years like Guiliani and McCain - is truly amazing!

I agree, but watching the MSM in Houston, his name has not been mentioned as far as I can recall. Guliani on the other hand has been plastered all over the local news here.

Huh? Besides making fun of his long-shot status, there's been trashing of Duncan here? What are you talking about?

I also oppose Rudy because he is just too liberal. I like him as a person because of the way he handled things after 9/11. I wish more Rudy and McCain supporters would realize that the MSM wants either one of them to be the winner of the Republican nomination so they can destroy them later. They would just hate having a true conservative like Duncan Hunter to win because he is just too clean and would be impossible to destroy. Go Hunter! The true conservative!

If Hunter can do this well with out the money and media hype of Rudy, imagine if the Groundhog Republicans (scared of Hillary's shadow) would have the courage to stand and fight for conservatism like they appear to fight just for a win.

Nice graphic, even if I'm a Hunter fan.

LOL! Worth repeating. You should use that as a Tagline!

Too bad for the news media and their chosen candidates. With Hunter doing so well in SC they'll have no choice but to cover him now.
