Sarajevo, 28 Feb. (AKI) – Bosnia’s majority Muslims have stepped up their drive for the abolition of the Serb entity Republika Srpska (RS). Created under the 1995 Dayton accord that ended Bosnia's civil war, the RS has been called a "genocidal creature" by Muslim member of Bosnia's three-man rotating state presidency, Haris Silajdzic. Due to the unstable situation in the country, the mandate of the high representative of the international community in Bosnia (OHR) was on Tuesday extended by a year. But the European Union has meanwhile decided to reduce its forces in Bosnia (EUFOR) - from the present 6,000 to 2,500 by the end of the year.
Thousands of people demonstrated in Sarajevo on Tuesday against a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the Bosnian Serb army committed genocide in the eastern town of Srebrenica in July 1995, but that Serbia didn’t participate in the massacre of up to 7,000 Muslims. The court ruled, however, that Serbia did nothing to prevent genocide and punish the culprits.
Demonstrators and war victims's families on Tuesday demanded the RS be scrapped, claiming that the ICJ's Monday ruling had proven the RS was a "direct result of genocide and other crimes against humanity." They echoed calls by Muslim member of the three-man rotating state presidency, Haris Silajdzic, and other Muslim leaders for constitutional reform and abolition of RS.
The Dayton accord divided the country into two entities, the RS and the Muslim-Croat federation, but the international community, which safeguards peace in Bosnia, has been gradually reducing the entities’ powers to strengthen the central government.
Muslims insist on a unified police force on a country level, while Serbs want to retain their own police in their entity, Republika Srpska (RS), which would be coordinated at the federal level. RS prime minister Milorad Dodik has said he would "never renounce RS police, as a part of the police structure of Bosnia-Herzegovina."
In a response to majority Muslim calls for the abolition of the RS, Bosnian Serbs have threatened to hold a referendum on independence and to secede from Bosnia.
Sarajevo demonstrators carried signs saying "Abolish RS", "Justice is unreachable" and complained that ICJ decision was "unjust" and "politically motivated." The Peace implementation council for Bosnia, an international body composed of leading western power, decided on Tuesday to extend the OHR's mandate by 12 months until June 2003.
The EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana, has stated that the security situation in Bosnia is now "much more relaxed" but a decision on the reduction EUFOR personnel could be reversed "if the situation worsened."
Great map, thanks.
See? No answer, Ljubo hit the mark.
Hoplite, you're such a sore loser, you may want to reach for another tissue you sissy.
He was a Popeye's guardsman, you know what a high value target those battered mushrooms are.
...AND BOSNIAN MUSLIMS CALL FOR GENOCIDE DENIAL LAW
The Bosnian Muslim member of Bosnia-Herzegovina's three-member Presidency, Haris Silajdzic, on February 28 said that anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe contributed to the ICJ's decision not to find Serbia guilty of genocide. The ICJ is the UN's highest court. "Europe is more inclined to the fascism of Serbian territorial expansionism than to democracy championed by the Bosniaks [Bosnian Muslims]," the Croatian news agency Hina quoted Silajdzic as saying. Silajdzic, who said he no longer wanted to use diplomatic language about the ruling, accused the international community, and particularly European states, of being unfair and inconsistent in their treatment of Bosnia during and after the 1992-95 war, saying that the ICJ ruling is merely an extension of a policy based on prejudice against Muslims. Silajdzic said, however, that the ruling clears the way for the adoption of a law in Bosnia that would prohibit denial that genocide was committed. In its ruling, the ICJ referred to the massacre at Srebrenica as an act of genocide. In a February 26 interview on Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation TV, Silajdzic said he will push for Srebrenica to be "taken out of the administrative organization of the Republika Srpska" and for a change to the constitution. The ruling "means that we will have to abolish the consequences of genocide. That is our obligation. I am primarily referring to the current organization of the country, which is a direct consequence of genocide. A new constitution must reflect the multiethnic character of the society of Bosnia-Herzegovina, as it had been for hundreds of years," Silajdzic said, adding that "some parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina have become ethnic apartheids, which is not sustainable." I saw the video of Kobe cussing in Serbian, too! Wonder who taught him that?????
I would be more than happy to entertain Mr. Silajdzic, I guess the muslims are itching for another ass kicking... *sigh
Uhhh... Vlade Divac?
:))))
Every time we get a good leader, the Mujos get him thrown in jail for "corruption". What's left is a split in the HDZBiH and at present it's all infighting. Dodik commands a presence on the Bosnian stage that we don't have since Komsic the atheist communist represents us (thanks to Balija's votes) and Dodik has actively argued that Croatians deserve their own entity in BiH. Basically, it's a call to stop Silajdzic from further centralizing BiH and dismantling RS.
When you find that a large majority of people oppose freedom and find joy in slavery you are in an Arab country
Hoplite a kind short note:
It would take me a matter of time to (intellectually) bury certain individuals in this forum...and I think you know that...and I think you know I've got bigger fish to fry.
Cheer up ole boy!
That seemed weird to me at first, but it makes perfect sense now.
Ne znam zasto Hrvatska toliko titra islamistima u Sarajevu. Someone should indict Silajdzic for war crimes (see the Silo[s] case). The Croats in Bosnia should start pressing for an entity. Long overdue (should've thought of that back in 1993), but worth a shot.
"Republika Srpska....Can I buy a vowel?"
Very funny!!!
Yes it is worth a shot, however, as Dio pointed out the Croats are getting hamstrung with their forced Union. Without Western backing its almost damned near impossible but I qualify that statement with this; at least if both Serbs and Croats slowly keep applying that pressure I think the mujo government will really start to show its cracks. It needs to be shown as the inept ruling body that it is. Especially if the Democrats take the WH, they'll make sure that the Frankensteinovic monster remains alive.
Perhaps there needs to be a Mostar redux?
You left out Gen. Weasley Klark.
Well, we voted in 2001 to secede from the Federation and set up our own entity, but that was crushed by Brit-led soldiers who went as far as to shut down our banks even though we voted 99.8% to secede.
I was bored so I did a little Photoshoppin' on the subject of Kosovo:
Anywho, I'm off. I have a darts rendezvous with some Irish folks. I beat them at it every Fri night, but they keep coming back. :)
["The ICJ ruling confirms what every sane person has known for a decade,..."]
Well, with the exception for a certain individual in this forum...Gosh, I wonder who that person might be?
Der Burgerflippa?
