RUDY Giuliani has opened a lead of up to 20 per cent over his declared rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, sparking near panic among Washington's pundits that a thrice-married supporter of abortion, gay rights and gun control could create such enthusiasm in a party dominated by Christian conservatives.
The former New York mayor's slew of strong poll results among likely Republican primary voters is battering the conventional wisdom that Mr Giuliani is too socially liberal and combustible to win the nomination. Some commentators insist the numbers cannot last and that Mr Giuliani's popularity will evaporate once voters are reminded of the positions he has taken and his tarnished record as an arrogant mayor with dubious connections in New York City.
Others are trying to find a reverse gear for their opinions because no Republican candidate in modern history has been so far ahead at this stage in the contest and then failed to win the nomination.
In Virginia, where Republican activists gathered for their annual dinner to hear him speak at a Marriott Hotel on Tuesday, it does not take long to discover his appeal.

Audience member Richard Brown said he would consider voting for Mr Giuliani. This might not be remarkable, except that he served as a US navy pilot on the same ship as Senator McCain in the Vietnam War and is worried that his former comrade is now trying "to grasp more of the right wing of our party".
Asked if he was worried about Mr Giuliani's social positions, he said: "There's not a candidate with a clean skirt out there. Hell, I've been married myself three times."

Or maybe they shouldn't be dictated by a federal bureaucracy.
Let's ask president dean what he thinks of Rudy's big lead.
YEAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHH.
I'm not panicked but I'm not optimistic about his chances. If the GOP keeps touching the hot stove they're bound to learn something......eventually.
I'm not panicked.
The Dems are more panicked than the right.
I agree. I don't think the reps are bothered at all. It's the dims who are in all out panic.
Oh , I agree,, They are so passe'... and so is a party platform and its planks, now its something you stand on, and not run on these days.
But come Nov 2008, I'll vote one time, straight Republican ticket.
I just pray that by then we have a 'good' candidate to defeat Slick's wife.
Whose morality? Folks on the left think it's immoral to prohibit gay marriage and that those that oppose it are guilty of the sin of bigotry. They also think it's immoral to deny resources to the poor so now we have government enforced charity.
But the problem I have with Rudy is his basing of Reagan and Goldwater.
There'd be no GOP if not for those men.
Some of the Republicans who post here certainly have their knickers in a twist.
If Rudy keeps Hillary out, call me a Rudy man.
I don't think so. The Dems are in a much better position given the political climate.
Wonder who the Constitution Party will be running?
Rally Racing has sports cars traveling on winding blacktop, dirt and logging roads at speeds of up to 130 MPH.
Often the fastest in the first few stages is found destroyed against a tree or rock long before the finish.
Rally races are usually around 17 or so stages, making up over 250 miles of grueling, bone pounding racing over 250 miles.
The Dakar is usually 17 or more days of racing, this year from Portugal to Mid-western Africa (Dakar).
Just finishing is a major accomplishment.
In my opinion, Rudy is the fast, yet fragile car, the debris of which is found about half way through the race, wrapped around a tree.
I am "right", I'm not panicked. What's there to panic about?
I'm not panicking. If they run him, I'll calmly vote for somebody else.
