THE double Oscar win for An Inconvenient Truth, former US vice-president Al Gore's expanded slide-show on global warming, could spur grassroots support for the fight against climate change, environmental advocates say.
That was because a movie, especially one that many people had seen on home video, took the issue beyond the realm of distant policymakers and put it on a more personal footing, according to Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club.
"The funny thing about the Oscars is, they're very intimate - people watch them in their living rooms," Mr Pope said.
"Global warming has seemed abstract, distant, something `for people who know more than I do'.
"I think what (the Oscar victory) really does is it puts this issue into people's living rooms," he said.
"While the climatology is really complicated, they're going to see that the solutions are pretty common sense, and people will talk about them and get excited."
An Inconvenient Truth won two Academy Awards: one for best documentary and another for best song.
In a related boost for the environmental movement, Mr Gore appeared with actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who announced that this year's televised ceremony had gone "green".

:-) Tim Blair has this idea that there is a Gore effect: when he appears snow and very low temperatures happen

Gore claims that he and his businesses are carbon footprint zero because he pays someone else to cut back. What a joke...so prove they cut back to counter you Gore, AND, this is just a wealth redistribution scam.
algore is sure getting obese off all you trendy, hip folks!
Conservation is for the little people.
Former Vice-President Al Gore, inventor of the internet, hopes to train 1,000 storytellers to spread the myth of man-made global warming.
Gore is on a one-pony carnival tour to promote his fanciful movie titled An Inconvenient Truth. The film is a hodgepodge of dramatic scenes of violent nature at work, concluding that ordinary people doing ordinary things are the quintessential evil force causing global warming and destroying the earth.
Gore complains that awareness of the climate crisis peaks and then is washed away as sane people turn to more important matters like buying cereal for the kids or cleaning the cat box.
Because normal people wont stay permanently fooled by Gores chicken little warnings, he hopes to train a small army of fog peddlers to confound and indoctrinate small children, gullible college students and a stray dog or two.
The Gore hustlers will come armed with a slide show and heads filled with junk science to promote the global warming religion at Rotary Clubs and high schools.
i was forced to watch 20 or so minutes of the oscars before i actually felt ill, and left my better half to it..
i saw whats her face singing about the internet designer al gore and now profit (intentional misspelling) guru al gore..
anyone else see the messages on the screen behind the song..
take public transport, walk rather then drive...jeeze i nearly fell off the sofa...here they were telling the great unwashed about how they should not drive, each and every one of them flying in on private jets...i mean how dumb do they think we are!!

the oscars is so embarassing....i actually felt embarased watching it....fake people slapping fake people acting as fake people on the back..
Gore did not win an Oscar.
He acted in a movie.
The movie won an Oscar for 'Best Documentary' (choke, cough, gag).
The headline is deceiving. 'Jack Nicholson's Oscar win...' for the Departed would be just as foolish of a headline.
