The problem of feeding an armed force engaged in combat, whether in alien or in home areas, has occupied the attention of military leaders since the beginning of organized warfare. Leaders learned that the ability of men to fight was related to the way they were fed and that the answer to the feeding problem often determined victory or defeat. The axiom that an army travels on its stomach is as good today as it has ever been, only now that classical stomach rides in airplanes, ships, tanks, submarines, and jeeps in every terrain and climate of the world. But there is no question that the problems of the army stomach have entered the age of specialization. This fact is increasingly evident as the story of army subsistence unfolds from the early simplicity to the contemporary complexity of the military feeding program.

The earliest rations of the United States Army were all-inclusive in purpose. For more than a century after 1776, the basis of all troop feeding--for soldiers in camp, on the march, in action, or just surviving--was the simple fare of meat and bread, and sometimes vegetables, known as the garrison ration. From the Revolutionary War to World War I, the garrison ration served the unit, the small group, and the individual. Moreover, it was intended to serve them in organized messes, in isolated groups, and in individual situations of combat and survival.

The AF has never been know for their fine dining - LOL!
After Vietnam, they contracted out most of the stateside chow halls. Those contracted out were like anything that goes to the lowest bidder - pitiful. We frequently accused them of serving up road kill - an we are not sure they didn't
In contrast, the chow hall at Cannon AFB still had military guys operating it and it was great.
The Navy seemed to have the best grub. I've only been to a few Navy bases, but in each one of them your didn't just eat - you dined.
Give me a chow hall staffed and run by actual military chefs any day!

Good morning my FRiend! Are you guys still snowed in up there?

They really did have good grub. Steak nearly every meal, breakfast included - cooked however you desired. Lunch and Dinner were steak and seafood with an assortment of veggies actually cooked to taste good. I was very impressed!

Now here's a MOS that gets little attention but is staffed with excellent people. I found out via the VN pipeline and although I had high test scores they put me in food service. I viewed it as permanent KP and fought it and tried for a transfer for 18 months. I then accepted it and moved on and looking back there were many occupational benefit's and many quality people and excellent supervisors. Although I wanted to be elsewhere I had it made and didn't know it. It did remove the warrior attitude I went in with though.

We cooked "eggs to order" (Fresh EGGS) every morning, when I was in.

When I was stationed in Meridian, we would have National Guard, & Army Reserve units coming thru on their way to bivouac (sp?); those guys RAVED about our chow!...We thought they were nuts!
