Gay Republicans seek recognition (Rudy Mentioned)
CNN ^ | 8/1999 | Maria Hinojosa

NEW YORK (CNN) -- These days, it seems as if it is good politics for conservatives to address the annual convention of gay Republicans.

"Keep pushing the Republican Party because you're pushing it in the right direction," New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told the Log Cabin Republican convention over the weekend.

That is a far cry from the 1992 Republican convention, when the party's far right wing attacked the gay community.

"Bill Clinton and Al Gore represent the most pro-lesbian and pro-gay ticket in history," said Pat Buchanan at the 1992 GOP convention.

The convention crowds responded with enthusiasm. But now, some Republican candidates are taking a less confrontational approach.

I'm pretty sure I could recognize them...They'll be the ones at the convention wearing the black leather short-shorts and fabulous pink cowboy hats.

Yes, there are those just as there are crazy idiots that LOOK perfectly proper, just as there are wife beaters, rapists, drug pushers, murderers, child molesters etc. in the GOP. If you look for the outrageous you will find them in both parties. I know several Log Cabin republicans and they don't wear leather short-shorts. They are professionals who are conservative in all aspects of their lives except that they happen to be gay. When I see comments such as yours I can't help but compare the mind-set of the authors of those comments with the those of the radical Islamists still in the 7th century. Makes me wonder if we're still in the 7th century right here at home.

talk about over reach. Are gays now in the protected PC class, no longer allowable to tell silly jokes about them?

Unless, of course, you're part of that crowd that has been slowly hijacking the party since the 80's to focus on a narrow social agenda that has nothing to do with conservatism, pushing more people out of the party than it is bringing in.

Well said!!

Well said, and completely wrong. Reagan coalition from 1980 thru the Contract With America, holding the conservative coalition together with a conservative agenda. The wheels have since come off as the party moves farther and farther from its platform, and you want to blame socons? LOL

Did Reagan have ad's like the Icecream add too? (see link in previous post) or just another bomb video?

I swear if their was one more week added to the 64 campaign their would have been a 'puppy' add;

Announcer: Do you like puppies little girl?
Little girl: Shakes head yes
Announcer: I do too, But do you know who doesn't?
Little girl: Shakes head no
Announcer: Berry Goldwater thats who.
Little girl: But >sniffle< >sniffle< why mister?
Announcer: Because he's a Republican, and all Republican's hate puppies because they were born without a heart!

fade to black

A vote for Goldwater is a Vote against puppies, and you like puppies don't you?

Yup, I do. Socons have a narrow agenda that has little to do with the real challenges we're all facing. While the world is entering WWIII along with all the other serious issues, all we seem to hear from Socons is ranting and raving about the homosexual "agenda" whatever they think that is. They seem to spend a great deal of time and effort trying to make these social issues top billing. To judge a candidate solely on a few social issues and discarding everything else is in my view irresponsible, selfish and downright dangerous.

Well, which of these, other than stopping the gay agenda, seems petty to you:

2nd Amendment to the US constitution being violated

Abortion on demand/Parial Birth abortion

Global Warming nonsense

Removing the Pledge of Allegiance from schools

Liberal Courts running roughshod over the constition

Illegal Aliens and their social and fiscal costs

Property rights being decimated by the Kelo decision

Political Correctness run amok

The socons you deride fight tooth and nail against these, as well as being the, by far, largest supporters of the war against islamo fascism.

Yep, never did like the guy. And as far as I'm concerned if your are not also socially conservative, you are not a conservative.

In addition to being a small government and fiscal conservative, Reagan was also a social conservative, as is the Republican platform.

I'm sorry, but you don't get to decide who's a conservative and who's not. As far as I'm concerned, Barry Goldwater was more of a conservative than you are.

I can decide whatever I want to decide. Last I checked it's STILL a free country.

Barry Goldwater was a phony baloney and certifiably flaky in his later years.

Ronald Reagan (a far greater and more influential conservative than Goldwater) is the standard against which modern day conservatives are measured against, not Goldwater. I am a conservative who came of age during the Reagan years and proudly call myself a Reagan conservative. That beats a Goldwater or a Goldwater conservative any day.

Oh my, how defensive.

No, he wasn't. You're bothered by the fact that he was a principled conservative dedicated to the principles of limitd government.

Ronald Reagan (a far greater and more influential conservative than Goldwater)

Certainly! But who influenced Ronald Reagan? Yes, Barry Goldwater.

Reagan also supported limited government, and I am not at all bothered by it. In fact, I applauded him for it and support it myself. Reagan was also socially conservative, understood the full conservative equation and did not support the Liberal social agenda Goldwater supported.
