WASHINGTON Bruce Crandall was a soldier once ... and young. As a 32-year-old helicopter pilot, he flew through a gantlet of enemy fire, taking ammunition in and wounded Americans out of one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War, Army records say.
Now, a week after his 74th birthday, Crandall received the nation's highest military honor Monday in a White House ceremony with President Bush.

I saw this today!!...Impressive!
As they read out loud the description of why he received his medal, the word picture was so outstanding & clear, I could understand perfectly why his valor encouraged the other pilots to press on and not give up.
It was awesome!
And a very humble man.....
..when first pressed to receive this, he passed and requested it go to the other guy with him that day.
But now it's his turn!

Most know he should have gotten the CMH decades ago. IIRC, it wasn't till recently that the review period was changed from two years to indefinite.
Attention on Deck!
LtCol Crandall........arriving!

Just happened to see the presentation on CSPAN today. President Bush's remarks were moving, as was the prayer at the end of the presentation ceremony.

I was wondering about his connection to the Gibson movie. I heard the description of his heroism on Fox and thought he might have been there during the time depicted in the film. Better late than never. God bless them all.

What time is the Pentagon ceremony? We can watch online if it is carried live.

Those NVA regiments had the LZs zeroed in and they were 'hot'. It took uncommon valor to go in again and again.22 times. That took balls of steel.

thought he might have been there during the time depicted in the film.I have to give you the Doh Award. He was Too Tall's boss who btw received also the CMH. LCol Crandall probably didn't earn brass hat points after getting excited with the medevac boys back at base camp.

The Mansions of the Lord
To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord
No more bleeding, no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
Just divine embrace, eternal light
To the Mansions of the Lord.
Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard though the angels sleep
Through the ages safely keep
The Mansions of the Lord.

I don't remember names too well so I don't recall all the characters in the movie. I do remember that Greg Kinnear was a helo pilot and I figured he portrayed Crandall in the movie. I just looked it up on IMDB.com. Yeah, you've missed several opportunities to give me the D'oh! award :-)

The web site says they will be covering it.....VCR set. I didn't have time last night to see if I got the Monday ceremony on VCR tape, but I've set it again for today's ceremony.
I have the Pentagon Channel playing online in the background now.....waiting. Hopefully will be able to hear the announcing.

Wouldn`t be fun to hear Murtha and Pelosi explain to Mr. Crandell why leaving Iraq now is such a great idea.

A bit of medal of honor trivia. A person can only receive a medal of honor once in their life. It can have no oak leak clusters.

Some more MoH trivia. Slightly over half of all MoH's are awarded posthumously.

Just to save some hair splitting, there were 19 individuals who received the MOH twice, but that was before 1917 - 1918 when it was changed to only once as it is now.
Here's a good site about the MOH. Check out the History link;
http://www.cmohs.org/medal.htm
A fair site which details Hollywood's treatment of real people and fictional characters who were awarded the MOH can be found here;
