The 20 Rarest Muscle Cars

Among muscle cars, there always were a few that, for whatever reason were a little more rare than others. This list shows the rarest factory built production muscle cars. These are cars that ANY buyer could walk into ANY dealer and conceivably order. One off cars for company executives, dealer modified cars (Yenkos, Baldwin-Motion, etc.) and purpose built race cars (427 Cobras) are not included. Cars are ranked by total built by year, model, body style, and engine. Transmission breakouts are also shown, if known. Further breakdowns (by color, options, accessory) are either impossible to get or impractical. Note that by their nature, Hemi Convertibles are widely represented on this list. Convertibles represented everything that the typical muscle car buyer didn't want - a higher price, more weight, and generally lower top speed. Add to that the high performance (and high price tag) for the Hemi engine, and it is no surprise that Hemi Convertibles are the most rare of all muscle cars. In fact, throughout the Hemi era (1966-1971), Chrysler built 8,420,000 cars, yet only 179 of them (1 out of every 47,000) were Hemi convertibles. Truly, as a group, these were the most rare of the rare.

That's the nicest Satellite EVER. The blue is beautiful, understated. I like it.

Where was that picture taken? Sitting here in Manhattan NYC, riding the train to work every day, I dream about owning a car like that, driving around those wide open spaces.

Its a beautiful car. I would have painted it hemi orange also.

Not in miles, but in most other ways it is about as far from NYC as you can get. We're in the middle of nowhere on the high plains of eastern Colorado. Dry and dusty, coyotes and rattlers, and a neat, little town called Julesburg not too far away.

Located in the extreme NE corner of Colorado along the Nebraska border, they shut down the airport on Sundays and have a sanctioned NHRA drag strip. The timing electronics are portable and kept in an old school bus that they park by the starting line.

This is father and son, (my brother and nephew), in the staging lanes. The red one is a true '70 Roadrunner but it used to be a 383 car, now a Hemi.

The Hemi used to be mine, had it in the 'Cuda I told you about, but not with a supercharger. The wrath of that Hemi when the puffer kicks in is almost surreal.

Believe it or not, my Challenger went quicker that day by about 3/10s of a second, but only because the nephew smokes the tires almost all the way down the track, which is far beyond ludicrous because he runs 22 inch wide drag radials on it, (wish I had a picture of the backside of it to post). He did beat his daddy though, which was rude. You should always let your dad win.

The car is a handful and a half, to say the least!

I got a blast from the past from your post. I recall looking at a 1969 Camaro convertible Indy Pace Car on the showroom floor and wondering who in the world could afford to pay $4100. for a car.....beautiful as it was.

I was in college at the time and also made the decision to leave school and enlist in the military.
