"Prez on the Rez" the first presidential candidate forum to take place on reservation land will not be coming to Sandia Pueblo.
Sandia, which is just north of Albuquerque, was a finalist to host the historic event for Democratic White House hopefuls to gather with tribal leaders to share their views on Indian Country.
But the event will instead take place Aug. 23 at the Morongo band of Mission Indians reservation outside Palm Springs, Calif., according to organizer Kalyn Free.
Free is founder and president of INDN's List, an Oklahoma-based organization dedicated to getting Native Americans elected to political office.
She said organizers chose California as a location over New Mexico for two main reasons:
# Some of the candidates were concerned that having the event in Gov. Bill Richardson's home state would give him an unfair advantage.
# California is poised to move up its 2008 presidential primary date making it all the more politically important for every candidate.

Just me, I'd rather spend some time in New Mexico as a tourist than California.
Cheaper visit and you can not top NM scenery and sunsets.

Yes, sounds like a shot across the bow. Did you know that bill clinton was not only the first Black president, he was also the first Native American president.
Kalyn Free in charge of running this is from Oklahoma and one of the dirtiest campaigners around. Not a nice person at all. That group only supports far left wing nutcases!
It fits. Richardson is a power player -- surrounds himself with those who will shower him with money and adoration. He learned well from the Clinton's.
Does fit! Just went to the Dem site here and they are saying Free is a Clintonite and bowed to Ms. Clinton on getting it out of NM. Thank God it is not going to be in OK!
Bill is KingBill in NM. He's got a ways to go to match up against QueenHillary. He'll learn his place (VP Candidate) or else.
That's my thinking too -- VP!
I remember when Richardson was on the Navajo Reservation campaigning for Congress back in 1980. He claimed then to be part Navajo, and hinted that he was was part of the Richardson family that established and own the 'semi-famous' Richardson's Trading Post in Gallup.
Right on!
I guess you should have started that part of your post with "Legend has it..."
Was that before or after his pro baseball days?
I'd be more inclined to believe the story if his name was Weatherill rather than Richardson.
Dave, I've always had the greatest respect for you; but....I'm not quite sure what you are saying, other than perhaps politely calling me a liar.
Richardson said something about his family having a long history of dealing with and helping out the Navajo. I (and many others) took it to mean that the carpetbagger was trying to get in people's minds that he was connected with Richardson's Trading Post.
Sorry I can't give you an exact quote or post a link. (it has after all been 27 years.) But it was MY first hint that Bill was a politician who would say anything that any particular audience would want to hear.
And coincidentally, There is another man actually named Bill Richardson working at the Trading Post.
Oh my gosh, no way!! I was just trying to make a joke using your screen name!!! Profuse apologies if I have offended you!!
Nah, I was apparently just a bit confused, (a not all that uncommon situation for me lately).
No Problemo, Amigo.
