US attacks insurgent targets

US forces bombarded parts of southeast Baghdad overnight, while a truck bomb attack in western Iraq killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 60.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, meanwhile, added his voice to those of thousands of street protesters in denouncing US forces after they arrested the son of one of the country's top Shi'ite leaders.

"American aircraft are bombarding terrorist targets that have been chosen by US and Iraqi forces, as part of our Baghdad security plan," said Brigadier General Qasim al-Mussawi, spokesman for the operation.

But a resident of the area told AFP that insurgents had fired mortar shells and that US troops appeared to have responded with artillery.

US spokesmen were not immediately willing to comment, but AFP reporters in downtown Baghdad heard the rumble of more than three dozen powerful blasts in rapid succession at around 10.00pm today (6am Sunday).

A senior Iraqi interior ministry official said the strikes were aimed at insurgent strongholds in Bo'aitha, a sparsely populated neighbourhood on the west bank of the Tigris, south of the city centre.

The blitz followed a day of bombings and mortar attacks in the capital that left at least 20 people dead, among them eight Iraqi police commandos who were killed in an insurgent assault on a checkpoint near the city's airport.

A booby-trapped fuel tanker detonated outside a Sunni mosque in the western Iraqi town of Habbaniyah, adding to the day's casualties, with a local medic reporting at least 40 people killed and 64 wounded.

Air strikes in Iraq at this time are usually used only:

1. In response to active fire from an area or building.

2. To interdict an ongoing IED installation.

3. To strike a very high-value target.

Can any active military confirm or correct the above regarding ROE?

Thanks in advance.

"US attacks insurgent targets"

Thanks to whatever dark and evil agreements the President apparently has with Mexico, that headline may soon apply to warfare within the United States.

A most fascinating article on several different angles...
be sure to make the connection between the article quotes by Talibani and the picture on the right..............

looks like we're getting to the nitty gritty.

This will go on for months. A lot of goons are going to be history by the looks of things.

I'm not military - however what I can say is that things were lively last night, beginning around 21:45 hrs.

Our position was relative to the action as one would be center court at a tennis match. Outgoing on the right.....incoming to the left after a moment's pause. A real head-turner.

It's fun to know the islamocreeps are getting it - everyone loved it.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like you are a civilian contractor perhaps? You should consider writing a vanity report of your observations every couple of weeks.

While keeping your head down, of course!
