I will admit that I am torn when it comes to the debate over climate control. Intuitively it makes sense to me that the increasingly rapid industrialization of the planet is adversely impacting the environment. But on the other hand there seems to be a strong body of evidence that the doom and gloom global warming alarmists like Al Gore have overstated their case in order to scare citizens into joining their crusade.
What has always made sense to me is the idea that the Republican Party has badly fumbled away the issue of the environment to Democrats. I know of no Republicans who fail to cherish clean water, fresh air, beautiful coastlines, lush forests, magnificent mountain and desert vistas, and a vibrant park system. Yet Democrats have successfully portrayed Republicans as against and a danger to all of those things.
Republican governor Mark Sanford from South Carolina authors an interesting piece today in which he calls for conservatives to make a case for protecting the environment as a matter of stewardship and personal responsibility before liberals convince the public at-large that intrusive, government-led solutions are required. Given the fevered pitch at which the scare mongers are working (and can anyone doubt that liberal Hollywood is about to bestow an Oscar on Al Gore for his documentary?) and the degree to which the public is beginning to realize how energy concerns are impacting the global war on terror, the time seems ripe for the Republican Party to get in the game when it comes to environmental issues. Both Mayor Giuliani and Senator McCain have campaigned recently about the need to address climate change; Speaker Gingrich has always spoken out on the need to protect the environment. I think there is a strong chance that environmental issues will play a pivotal role in the 2008 presidential contest - on both sides of the political aisle.
FYI! Looks like Gov Sanford zeroed in on one of the problems in the GOP.
I've said that for a long time. Conservation should be a conservative issue. It's just another one that we've let the radical left steal from us.
I would love to see Mark Sandford run for President.

I agree 100%! It is like some people have been asleep at the switch.
I think he will someday! Would love to see him on the ticket as the VP! He would bring a lot to the ticket IMHO and set him up to run for President!

While we are in the neighborhood--the Oscars may be very very interesting re someone named Al Gore--more than just an award is in discussion...
I know and it is disgusting how the media has played up the far left and their ideas on the environment! It is like a whole group of people cannot think for themselves and have to wait for a soundbite!
My daughter was one of the reviewers at the college paper for the Oscars -- fortunately, her assignment was Queen which we saw together last Sunday. I had visions of her assignment being Gore's picture -- UGH! I was a happy camper when she said she had Queen not Gore! :)
Oscars are going to make me ill this time with all the love affair with Gore! My mute button will get a workout! :)

That figures! Announce at the Oscars -- Ms. Clinton just might have a heart attack! Is Gore still so fat? I haven't seen him in ages.
He is speaking here at OU on the environment and I am not going. He is near the bottom of people I don't want to listen to in person.

Who can forget the unnecessary forest fires during the Clinton administration because sensible logging (even clearing of dry, dead underbrush) was verboten? Who can forget how thousands of acres of Yellowstone, one of our national treasures, was allowed to burn like tinder?
Or the dead rivers and polluted groundwater found in Eastern Europe after the collapse of the iron curtain? There is nothing more dangerous to the environment than turning over its control to extremists who see man as an abberation and an enemy rather than a partner with nature.
Private property owners take care of the land better than collectivist, Marxist governments.
What more needs to be said?
Oh, the globe has been warming since the end of the Pleistocene, and it's the sun's fault.
