Fat Cats Love Rudy

Biz bigs from oilmen to software execs join push to fatten war chest by $25M

They are Texas oilmen and Nevada liquor magnates, California software execs and New York financiers - and they are all hosting events for Rudy Giuliani in the next five weeks as part of an aggressive fund-raising push.

Having set a goal of $25 million in campaign cash for his presidential bid by March 31, the next federal filing deadline, the former mayor has planned a whopping 27 fund-raisers over the next 26 workdays, according to campaign documents obtained by the Daily News.

The mostly private events will be held in every corner of the country, although New York, California and Texas are clearly shaping up to be the former mayor's most reliable cash cows.

And almost all the fetes come with a high-priced entrance fee: $2,300 per person or $4,600 a couple, the maximum allowed by law.

Experts said Giuliani was setting an unusually brisk pace, especially this far from the 2008 election, but it was likely part of a larger strategy to dispel doubts about his candidacy among some Republicans.

"If the argument is that he's too liberal and he comes out with big fund-raising numbers, he can make the case that he is just as viable as everyone else," said Prof. Anthony Corrado of Colby College, an expert on campaign finance.

The internal schedule was recently sent to big givers by Giuliani's new finance director, Donna Henderson.

In an attached message, she highlighted the plummeting poll numbers of GOP presidential rival Sen. John McCain - something Giuliani's campaign has carefully refrained from doing.

"Just this weekend, a CBS News poll showed Republican primary voters choosing Mayor Giuliani over John McCain 50% to 39%," Henderson wrote.

Fund-raiser hosts include Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens, who is slated for a March 6 event in California; Bill Mundell, a California software exec with close ties to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger; Larry Ruvo, whose Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada is the largest liquor distributor in the U.S.; Sid and Mercedes Bass, descendents of a Texas oil fortune, and New York hedge fund honcho Paul Singer.

"Obviously, Rudy is overwhelmed with the national support we have been getting," said top Giuliani adviser Anthony Carbonetti. "And he is looking forward to working hard for every vote."

If they had contributors to Hillery's campaign they would have been referred to as "Captains of Industry".

WOW! T. Boone Pickens and a member of the Bass Family! Impressive. T. Boone and Tom Ricks, owner of the Texas Rangers, hosted an event in Houston TX earlier this month.

Rudy's judgment questions his leadership ability.

Like her chief of staff son, Aniello brings only a high school diploma to her high paying municipal position.

Interesting leadership. Got any more?

Rudy's judgment questions his leadership ability

Rudy and his court was never one to turn down questionable ethics deals. The ethics being in his personal life or involving $$$$. Myself being a NYC resident with a long memory, while Rudy was the medicine NYC needed after a long dem run here, Rudy has many faults where no spin is needed that will surface during a presidential run.

I bet you he doesn't care at all about that and nor does he expect any money from them or an endorsement from the NRA. He's not losing any sleep over that I can tell you. He's getting plenty of money without them.

I can't understand how any of his supporters think all this stuff wouldn't come out if he were the rep nominee.

There is just too dang much of it out there.
