Nice read,
.
.
.
....the primary responsibility of the government should be to protect the citizens (not non citizens), our constitution, and our Nation. We in turn are being sold out by the politics of politicians whose sole reason d'etre is to get elected. It's the first priority of the Drat party. The lust for power is a disease, consuming and blinding.
RINO's are DRats in training.
God Bless Ronald Regan.
What have we learned ?

First, we need to get the second amendment folks prepared for a hunt. RINOs look better on the wall than in the Oval Office:

I call this one, "Rudy."

JR, it seems to me, right or wrong, that Washington took the last midterms as empirical evidence that border control doesn't really matter. They all seem to feel very safe supporting illegal immigration, including President Bush. And they do this stuff for a living. So it leaves me questioning what the real deal is. Can border control tip an election? It sure seems neither party thinks so.

A conservative who can, from the heart, articulate conservatism's common sense will find popular support, especially when running against a true lib. Especially one with negatives as high as Hillary's. Liberalism is not a natural state of mind nor way of looking at life.

And, with regard to Iraq and the war on terror, most people do realize who and what attacked us on 9/11 and that they are going to attack us again. There is hope, but a McCain or perhaps a Rudy isn't who or what the "vast right wing conspiracy" is looking for.

You've delivered a powerful message here, and I would only take issue with a couple of your positions. But that's not my point or purpose here. Instead, I focus on what it will take for a GOP candidate to win the election.

This person will not simply need to have the right ideas. This is where Rush Limbaugh and many others err. In order to win, this person will:

1. Need to have or quickly build some name recognition.
2. Be able to convey a powerful, likeable, and persuasive vision to Americans about what this country means and what it should become.
3. Have, at least most of, the "right ideas."

This is why Reagan became what he did. Not just because of his ideas, but because Americans knew him and because he was such a powerful, colorful, and convincing communicator.

This is also why GWB only squeaked by in his two victories--it wasn't that he "wasn't conservative enough" -- it was his inability to skillfully, regularly, and consistently hammer home a great vision.

You think conservatives can't win primaries?

I don't know. Are there any that are planning on running? Unless the Republican elites currently in power start talking up potential candidates that reflect conservative values, the media will pick who goes to the primaries and who wins them...for both parties.

Not going to happen. Fact is, Americans say they are conservative but don't live their lives that way. Too many think socialism is good and morality is relative - or only applies to the other guy. It will take something big to change things. JMO.

Duncan Hunter is the answer. ALL GOPers will support him, and he will pick back up the middle and Reagan democrats with

a) Border Security

b) Empahsis on reversing manufacturing losses to China and losing our "arsenal of democracy"

3) Lack of nuance, better known as tap dancing, which all the other candidates are busy doing.

By the way, why are we so eager to give up on our traditional American conservative values and principles?

Plenty of that on FR. Maybe we can thin the herd.

"A leader to the left is not a leader we need."

That's true, but that won't stop someone that the people perceive to be a leader -- left or right -- from winning the election.

"...Based on the candidates we have, it looks to me like it takes five to ten years to really prepare for a Presidential run. The ones who have done that are all kind of squishy...."

Newt's the only one, in my opinion, that fits your total description. And he could win, if he can get his message out despite the MSM. It will take a LOT of organization and $$$.

If Republicans support a conservative in the primaries - they will win in 2008.

GO DUNCAN HUNTER!!!

Then if the party is so infected with RINOs, corruption, etc., it is time for a new party.

Yes it is. Unfortunately many Republicans only look at the next election or two and are so scared of losing an occasional election, that they would rather vote for RINOs than try and setup a new Conservative party.

Setting up a new party is not something that can be done in one election cycle, and it also means that we would have to deal with attacks from both Republicans and Democrats, who would do everything they could to keep us out of the debates, off of the ballots, etc.

I know many Republicans who are disgusted with the GOP, especially in my home state (Texas), and I think quite a few could go for a new party, but it's going to be tough.
