Four years ago I decided to quit while I was ahead and concluded my 24-year political career. When I left the Senate, I also left the public policy debate and talking-head role to those actually in the arena. However, because I believe that the 2008 presidential election will be the most important election since 1980, I have decided to rejoin the national debate and exercise my right as a private citizen to express a strongly held opinion about who should be elected, and why.

Today's mortal need is for a leader who trusts our people enough to tell them the truth about the festering domestic problems that have been swept under the rug for a quarter-century. We need a president who can face up to these problems even as he leads an increasingly reluctant country in a war against a dangerous enemy that will follow us home from any battlefield on which we are defeated.
Where is such a leader to be found? American history gives us a clue where to look: When the times have required great leaders in the past, they seem to have been there all the while, just waiting to be called. John Adams wrote in his diary in 1774 that "We have not Men, fit for the Times. We are deficient in Genius, in Education, in Travel, in Fortune -- in every Thing. I feel unutterable Anxiety."
Yet, at that very moment, the greatest assemblage of leadership the world has ever known was emerging all around him. We seem, for some reason, to be able to see greatness only in the rearview mirror.
I believe the man we need to meet the mortal need today is here. He is experienced, but has not lost his common sense or his ability to be outraged.

Phil Gram is a man to truely respect. McNut backed Phils run for POTUS. Loyalty is very important but, McNut ain`t Phil Gram. Don`t really understand thjis but, McNut has my vote if he wins the nomination.
abm
anybody but mccain
he is a hot head and a loser
no chance of beting hillary or ever doing something to please conservatives.
McCain for President?
When pigs fly, and America has lost her soul.

Ding. Ding. You are awarded the prize for being the first to use that canard in the 2008 election cycle, Mr. Gramm!
We heard it in '88, we heard it in '92, we heard it in '96, we heard it in 2000, we heard it in 2004. And I believed it and acted on it--held my nose and voted against the worse of the two candidates.
Now we see that it wasn't true in those elections, and it isn't true today. We're past being fooled again. No more, "Your bozo is worse than my bozo. It's the most important election since [fill in blank], so I HAVE to vote for my bozo."
Nope. If I vote this election, it will be FOR someone; it won't matter in 20 years which wing of the bi-factional ruling party wins; and, although I will be accused of wasting my vote, I will have actually cast a meaningful vote which, as momentum grows and more people see the light, will finally break the stranglehold of the current dominant parties.
The only question is, "Can it happen soon enough to save the Republic?"
So we only need that pigs flying thing then. Right?

Et tu, Philus?
Any candidate who brazenly attacks the First Amendment doesn't pass the Dickie Flatt test.
John McCain: The Republican candidate endorsed by the New York Times for 2008. That's all you need to know.
Did McCain pay him to write that, or did Phil go bonkers?
Phil, you ignorant slut.
Good question, because it sure isn't McCain.
Better a McNut who has a shot than a McNobody who doesn't have a chance.
To quote a great American:
"John McCain, you treasonous bastard, . . . How dare you even think that you are qualified to sit in the oval office! Ronald Reagan's office! President? Hah! You miserable excuse for a two-bit political hack, you're not even qualified to shine Ronald Reagan's boots. If you do run, I'm afraid you're gonna be at least one vote short. It'll be a cold day in hell before a traitor like you ever receives my vote. And that's a campaign promise you can take to the bank."
That's why we're talking about this now. I'm not worried about what to do IF McCain gets the nomination, I want to stop him now so I don't even have to deal with that situation.
