Senator John McCain said Monday the war in Iraq has been mismanaged for years.

He said Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (news - bio) will be remembered as one of the worst to ever hold the job.

He said the United States is paying a heavy price for the mismanagement.

He said Rumsfeld never put enough troops on the ground to succeed in Iraq.

Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm were at his side.

Both endorsed McCain over the weekend.

I am disgusted with McCain.....

I agree. McCain reminds me of the Democrats with the constant harping on leadership DURING THE TIME OF WAR.

Offering solutions and different strategies is ONE THING, and welcome, but everytime he plays the BLAME card he loses me.

Win the friggin war and complain about mis-management when it is OVER!!!

You are right..and I didn't say it the way I meant.

The fact that they couldn't come from the north DID harm us in the aftermath of the taking of Baghdad by NOT having done what you said.

What I meant was that I don't know that the 5th ID (which I think are the ones rerouted) even had gotten up with them by they time they "took" Baghdad.

You are very right about them being needed...but, that wasn't Rummy's fault.

In fact, if IIRC...John Murtha recently said he was in Turkey about that time...and was asked to get the Turkish government to let our troops just travel through Turkey....and he FAILED his mission.

"He just no sooner complimented social Conservatives by stating Roe V. Wade should be overturned then goes and hits a low blow on Rummy."

McCain is not to be believed on his "social conservatism".

The president can do nothing -- the best a president can do is appoint strict constructionist judges, which Giuliani also promised. I think I can take Rudy's word, but I sure can't take McCain's. Not to mention that McC is weak on terror (don't forget the terrorist protection bill), doesn't respect the Constitution (McCain-Feingold "finance reform") and is literally insane.

His calling for Roe V. Wade is just another campaign point...NOT something he cares deeply about.

He also came out today calling for "securing our borders"...but not too long ago he was laughing at the prospect of building a fence...and he was a co-sponsor of Kennedy's immigration bill.

He it telling so many lies....his nose should be as long as jon carrys....LOL

Yes, he did suffer for his nation...but since then he has not lived up to the promise: Keating, Bonano and now this sickening comment.

Sir, it's time to quit public life.

I am disgusted with McCain

I'm not!!!! McCain is a lunatic who does crazy things for the benefit of McCain! We know that and can expect it in the future.

Now then, I AM disgusted with all the rest of the 'Gentlemen senators' who happen to be conservative republican. Where is their outrage regarding McCain's attack on Rumsfeld? Maybe they ought to develop a few cajones and call the 'gentleman fron Arizona' what he needs to be called, a lunatic.......

I had no idea. In that case, I bet MURTHA TALKED TURKEY OUT OF HELPING US. Remember how anti-war and anti-US Murtha is. I would bet he was doing the opposite of what his mission stated and is at least partly responsible for Turkey not allowing us to go through it's territory.

Someone should investigate this.

Just that he said it should be overturned is a compliment although I don't believe he would do anything about it if he managed to fool enough people.

Last week during the House speeches about Iraq...Duncan Hunter stood up several time and listed what the military did NOT have at their disposal at the time of 9/11.

It was SCARY how unprepared our military was to fight a war...but, he also listed what they have now..and what they have in the manufacturing pipeline..and I was impressed.

However, to hear Murtha...you would think we have no troops, no supplies, no weapons, no new recruits...IOW..you would think the military today...looks like it did under CLINTON and Murtha.

It was Murtha telling the "story"...so do we believe he was asked at all???

And, like you said, if he was asked...did he HELP or HURT.

Also..he said Nancy Pelosi was with him at the time..think about it.

Sounds to me as if Murtha and Rockefeller were over in that part of the world around the same time - probably for the same reason, too.

If he had of run the war as the Generals wanted instead using the high tech weapons he did we would have more that 3000 dead

Do you recall the estimates of the Generals who later complained they wanted more troops? they wanted from 300,000 to 500,000 more troops and estimated 5,000 to 10,000+ dead in 9 months of fighting, before we got to Baghdad itself.

We should ... recognize that being taken prisoner is not an accomplishment.

However, the way you behave while a prisoner certainly can be.

McCain's assessment of anyone, let alone Donald Rumsfeld, should be given little credence.
McPain is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, brightest light in the chandelier, Rumsfeld on a intellectual level could run circles around McCain ... McCain knows it and in his typical non-intellectual shoot from the hip style is endeavoring to smear a man by far his superior in every capacity.

This is outburst is a perfect example of why McCain (A) Ran his 2000 primary campaign into the ground. (B) Will run his 2008 primary campaign into the ground. The guy is just not stable.

Recall the 2000 campaign? At the time, NONE of his former staff publicly supported him, and the ONLY Republican Senators who did were among those who voted for Clinton's acquittal.
