Senator John McCain said Monday the war in Iraq has been mismanaged for years.
He said Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (news - bio) will be remembered as one of the worst to ever hold the job.
He said the United States is paying a heavy price for the mismanagement.
He said Rumsfeld never put enough troops on the ground to succeed in Iraq.
Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm were at his side.
Both endorsed McCain over the weekend.

Don't forget that McCain is the one who spearheaded and pushed through "The Terrorist Protection Bill", giving the terrorists equal rights as US Citizens and forbidding even "degrading" treatment of the terrorists, never mind a nuke could be going off in the US and we need to find out where and when.
McCain is sure good at blowing election chances.
Those are so much fun to send back in his prepaid envelope.
Les Aspin should get that honor.
John McCain is losing it.
I have seen it before (in person), when pushed or seen to be losing his momentum - he goes off the deep end.
John McCain is a friggen nut case - it's really too bad.
Me too. But he's right on this one. I'm a long-time Rumsfeld supporter, but have finally come to this same conclusion. He ran the war like a CEO runs a drug company.
It amazes me that McCain can find Repubs out there willing to fall in line behind him.
...and Dubya ran it like the owner of the Texas Rangers runs a baseball team.
Just in case you needed yet another reason to never vote for John McCain...
Fall is right,,,
The only ones who I know supporting him are so old their legs won't hold them up.
He's a terrible case.
McNamara was a goober of a secretary as well.
McCain will be a fleeting thought when he gets going on where he stands with Illegal Immigration alone. WOT position won't even matter.
Let him have one of these last ditch shots at Rumsfeld. Rummy took on the task of transforming our military to fight two major conflicts, of a new variety at that, on two fronts at the same time and he succeeded well in that effort.
History will be kind to Rummy even if McCain is not.
Of course you are ignoring what a reduced military and a mess Clinton left behind.
Rumsfeld had to work with what he had. He and our wonderful troops came through with flying colors.
The reason we didn't have more troops and equipment available was because Clinton cut it in half, literally.
But Bush and Rumsfeld didn't want to waste time with counterproductive finger pointing, they worked out a strategy which clearly was a winning one -- just look how fast we won in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The insurgency is a different problem that is hard to fight with the military, because of its asymmetric warfare nature.
McCain will be remembered as an evil man and the worst Sin-ator that AZ ever had!
Hey McCain... F*** you.
Me: John McScreaming Idiot is one of the worst RINOcrat senators of all time. Now, there, I feel better saying it, again.
