A new poll of Alabama voters shows Republican and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton , D-N.Y., as the front-runners in the state's presidential primaries.
The poll by American Research Group of Manchester, N.H., showed 31 percent of Alabama Republicans favored Giuliani among a field of 13 party candidates. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich , R-Ga., was second with 25 percent, followed by U.S. Sen. John McCain , R-Ariz., with 19 percent.
The telephone survey was conducted Feb. 8-13 and included a random sample of 600 likely Republican primary voters living in Alabama. No other candidate received more than 3 percent, and 16 percent said they were undecided.
A similar survey was conducted among Democratic voters, showing Clinton as the clear favorite among 10 candidates with 44 percent. U.S. Sen. Barack Obama , D-Ill., was second at 13 percent, with former U.S. Sen. John Edwards , D-N.C., close behind at 11 percent. No other candidate received more than 3 percent, and 23 percent said they were undecided. The margin of error on both polls was 4 percent.

The results gained national attention among political outlets including Politico.com, a newly-created online and print publication dedicated to covering the presidential campaign.
"With Alabama considering moving its primary from the current date of Tuesday, Feb, 5 to Saturday, Feb 2, this contest could garner more attention then originally believed," wrote Politico reporter Aoife McCarthy
"Already, both Republican and Democratic hopefuls have made their way to Alabama, including Republicans McCain, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Rom ney , and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee . Democratic visitors include Edwards and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack ."
Won't happen.
Ever.
(((((PING)))))
Well they didn't call me. I certainly would not have told them I'd vote for either of these liberal pukes. If these people are the best America has to offer as potential Presidential candidates, we are in very very sorry shape for leadership in this country. Very sickening.
"But a new poll of Free Republic's Alabama members shows Rudy far behind."
This doesn't surprise me. I know many people in Alabama that like Rudy. They understand that winning the WOT is the #1 issue facing our country.
We have repeatedly been told Rudy will never make it in the South, just wait until he visits... his numbers will go sky high!
RUDY!, RUDY!!, RUDY!!! :)
My family in Alabama would never vote for Rudy!
Not in my state. We don't like carpetbaggers, and immoral liberals.
Well we will see. He's already at the top in Georgia. Alabama is next - so far he's on the top there. Now if Newt gets in that may change.
Jeeze ya think? ;-)
John Edwards isn't a carpetbagger. Is he your guy?
NEWT IS NOT GETTING IN. What part of NEWT CAN'T WIN a general election don't you understand?
John Edwards is South Carolina's or is it North fool!
Of course, roughly one-quarter of GOP voters don't know Rudy is strongly pro-choice to the point of getting awards from NARAL. Once they find that out, the support for Rudy plummets. And wait until the Southern conservative vote finds about about Rudy's stance on gun rights...
Personally, I like Newt but I think he would be better off helping the campaign rather than running for president. He's a very smart man. He seems to think that if he gets in that everyone will stop what they are doing and vote for him. I guess he thinks he's the savior of the Republican party. Who knows.
I guess all you Southerners look alike to them...
My point is "who isn't a carpetbagger in this election?"
John Edwards is North Carolina I believe.
