Assault Rifles for Hunters? (Zumbo goes mad)
Remington Country website ^ | 16 FEB 2007 | Jim Zumbo

Posted on 02/18/2007 11:32:57 AM PST by xsrdx

As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington, and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.

I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms.

I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."

This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.

I need to find that video clip of that statement...

Chucky Schumer sits up there practically yawning in disrespect to anyone like Susanna Hupp that rightfully gives them the "Nth" degree...

I'm not so sure they are going to be yawning very much if they try the same tactics on the next AWB...

And what is the rational purpose of limiting capacity? Hit less ducks?

Every heard of a punt gun?
Saw one once, at the Royal Armoury in Leeds. It was a giant shotgun on fixed mount than ran the length of a small boat and fired over the bow. It was used by a market hunter who sold his kill. It fired TWO POUNDS of shot! I think it was supposed to clean out an entire nesting area at one shot... Looked like a bear to reload, though...

Iirc, Remington does not make an AK or M-16/AR 15 variant for the masses.

Do they even make a semi-auto rifle?

...and now a word from our sponsor...

The AR15 (M-16 etc.) round - 5.56 mm or .223 - was originally invented for varmint hunting. People were sizing large cases down to take a long .22 slug. It didn’t take long for Stoner to pick up on the idea.

Have you seen some of the modified AR15s? They have the capability of 1/4" groups at 100 yards off of a bench. Now that is a tight group.

One more thing...For Mr Zumbo's edification...I have yet to hunt prairie dog or 'gopher' with a rifle. It is far more sporting to use a pistol with iron sights. I prefer the Ruger Mark II.

Me, too. The minute you go hunting with it, it is a hunting rifle. Doesn't matter what it is, you are hunting with it.

Save your assault rifles for assaults. (/sarc sheesh!)

An actualapology from a public figure... and not a "I'm sorry if you're upset at what I said" non-apology... a rare sight nowadays.

However, I don't buy his reversal, and his protests that he's "a best friend". He never showed why he thinks he's wrong now, he merely lists his resume talking points... which is likely because he's merely trying to defend his career options.

Zumbo, it is IMPORTANT that I be able to wield the same arm and ammo as the common footsoldier because it is "necessary to the security of a free state". When (not if) some fool in power improperly sets militarized forced against us (Waco, Ruby Ridge, the War Veterans pay march in DC in the 30's, etc), we MUST be allowed to engage them from a smiliar fighting stance. THAT is the true meaning and importance of the Second Amendment.

Semi-auto's are great for hunting. It allows a follow-up shot much more easily than a bolt action rifle.

Yeah, we can't all afford fancy brand name stuff. As long as 7,62x39 is a suitable calibre for the quarry, what's wrong with using an SKS?

I read that as "I'm sorry I got called on the carpet". Did he aplogize to the AR & AK owners he called terroists? NO. He just tried to CYA and make excuses for revealing what he really thought.

The damage is already done and he can shove his retraction (it realy doesn't even read like one).

They did make the 740 and 7400 semi-autos. The current model is the 750 semi. They also make a tactical pump that takes AR mags.

I saw a e-mail from their V.P. of product development that they were bringing out an AR10 type rifle in .308.
