If the Democrats have to resort to getting political cover from someone they despise, what does that say about them?
And, had Bush answered any other way, can you imagine how far the Democrats would be going right now? They might have decided to simply defund the entire war, and blame it on Bush for calling them unpatriotic.
When Bush cant win, thank God he has the good sense to not play to lose.
We can't continue to be on the defensive and allow the Dems to frame the debate.
Ok, well I'll defend your right to say what you believe, and my right to disagree. Strongly sometimes, even.
Having said that, I think sometimes you say things humorously, as that's your style. Some don't catch it, is all.
I too agree that we're teetering on the edge, and if we leave Iraq then we're finished.
My only disagreement with your view is that I do not see enough important conservative people helping, rather than criticizing, the President.
Come on now, I've been active on this site since Clinton's impeachment. I've seen the dems, their spokesmen, elected officials, et al defend Clinton to the death. If Clinton had said the sky was purple they'd have fought anyone saying it was really blue.
You've been here for most of the Bush presidency. you've seen our own attack Bush enough, haven't you? You've said you've lost respect for him. Well, how much of that is due to the constant (in my opinion) drumbeat of negativity aimed at him from people on our side? God knows I don't think he's perfect; far from it.
To me the stakes are just too damn high (losing not only Iraq, but our country, too) to over analyse the President's performance. He is right about the War. I'll stand by him on it.
But do admit, there is no unity on our side like the dems have. I'm very sorry this is so and wish we'd back off being perfect and look to winning the dang war.
We'll, we've all had our say, and I'm sure no words will convince you to think as me or I to think as you.

Personally, I'm not worried about that. Dems themselves can't even define the debate or provide any solutions. Harry Reid was on Late Edition and gave so many non-answers, it was ridiculous. Every Dem discussing an issue always uses some figure from the latest poll to prop up whatever bilge they're spewing. Polls are fickle....principles are not. Candidates who have them and stick to them are our answer.

The President's press conferences are widely telecast live and unedited.

Will you at least admit two things:
1) that these conferences take place around 11am on a weekday, and whether because of strategy or safety concerns are not publicized by the White House more than a few hours ahead of time. Even people who might like to tivo or set a vcr are often unprepared to do so.
2) by a magnitude of powers, what most people hear as 'news' is what they hear from Leno, Letterman, Colbert, npr, mtv, and a hundred other outlets who filter the President's words.

I agree he comes over well in the US but I see him at home.
He is very much the man to say what will give him the best press and put him in the best light with the people he is with at the time. Is that what you want from your President I would rather have a man who believes in what he is doing and does it regardless of others around him - and I do not mean the general public or the press Blair has no real interest in either group
I would like to see the media/press/pundit class ask Democrats who oppose our war in Iraq what they perceive happening in the near future if we leave, and what their response would be if we needed to return to Iraq? What would happen to the availability and price of oil? What would happen as far as Israel is concerned, given the US won't stand behind our words when the going gets more difficult? What happens when Hamas and Hezbolla get more power? What would the USA response be if or when future terrorist attacks happen in America and tied directly to Iran or Syria or extremist groups in the region?
The list goes on and on.....
