Liberals are now the appeasers of hate
The Australian ^ | February 17, 2007 | Nick Cohen

Posted on 02/17/2007 12:26:02 AM PST by Dundee

In the aftermath of the Iraq invasion, the Left's conscience has failed the world, writes Nick Cohen in a new book - What's Left? How the Liberals Lost Their Way.

IN the run-up to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, the rich world's liberals were in danger of becoming ridiculous. At no point before in history had their ideals seemed so dominant.

About two-thirds of the world's nations were democracies at the end of the 20th century, not always very good democracies, but making a start nonetheless...

The non-governmental organisations the liberals most admired - Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Medecins Sans Frontieres - had successfully raged against oppression and mass suffering, and become "players" in global politics. Governments consulted them and feared their criticisms.

...

When asked why they were going along with British MP George Galloway (a leader of the Stop the War coalition who used to suck up to Saddam Hussein) and his kind, the liberal anti-war marchers protested that they didn't support totalitarianism and wanted nothing more than to uphold these exacting standards.

...

Hundreds of millions of liberal-minded people felt the same - not just in Europe, but in South and Central America, Canada, the Middle East, South Africa, India, Australia and Asia. Yet for all their reasonableness, and all their good and intelligent arguments, they were in danger of becoming vicious, self-defeating and fraudulent.

...

Saddam was against everything represented by Amnesty International and all the other admirable nongovernmental organisations. No anti-liberal, anti-democratic tyrant could be further from the professed principles of the British Liberal Democrats, the European Social and Christian Democrats and the African National Congress. He was an embodiment of the mass terror and racism of the 20th century which they said they wanted to escape...

It is a good and well reasoned article, but he takes a very long time to basically say that modern Liberalism is morally bankrupt, but he does not say why.

The reason is that because all "morality" comes from above. Human beings want to be their own gods (a sin as old as the Garden of Eden). Hence, a sinful mankind wants morality without God.

Liberalism can preach all day about this or that being "illegal" or "immoral" - whether it be a war or some other topic. The problem is that if their ideals are based on what they wish to be moral and just, and are not based on a sovereign God, they will always collapse under the weight of their own immorality and sin.

Still, a great piece and well worth the read. Thanks.

The left claims to champion the "little man." I think people on the left see in dictators like Saddam a helpless "little man" who is being persecuted by the evil U.S. imperialist empire. In much the same way they consider a violent criminal -- for example a serial killer or just a common gangseter -- to be poor "little men" who are victims of society and society's old-fashioned mores. The victims of these "little men" are always overlooked.

What would be the effect of pretending that it was illegal to overthrow a genocidal regime on Iraqis who were struggling to build a better country? The answer came soon after the invasion when the liberals gave aid and comfort to the Islamists and the Baathists. The "insurgents" were able to use the liberals' slogans - "It's all about oil!" "It's illegal!" - and to taunt their opponents with the indisputable fact that even their supposed liberal allies in New York, London, Berlin and Paris didn't support them.

The push for a democratic Iraq had American military and financial power behind it, but liberals the world over denied it moral support and legitimacy, which matter more. In the eyes of liberal opinion, the millions of Iraqis who voted for a new government were little better than the receivers of stolen goods.

So good it bears repeating. The Liberal/Left/Transnational Progressive/ Cultural Marxists are a Fifth Column inside a besieged Western Civilization.

For liberals, their is no treason if there is no state. Their view is that we are all one world; thus, truth and culture are relative. There is no "real" democracy, there are only points of view. All of there are equal. No good, no evil, just differences.

That's what they believe.

Great column.

It is ironic that Obama, Murtha, and Galloway loudly fight against the attempts to give Iraqis freedom.

Are Murtha, Galloway and Obama rabid anti-Shi'ites?

Why do they still prefer Saddam's jackbooted form of government?

Well they are wrong. People are different, cultures are different and nations are different. We only have similarities, not likenesses.

It is a very good thing to be different. If we were all the same, It would be a very dull world.

Don't confuse the America-hating left with being liberals. Liberals would applaud the freedoms gained in Afghanistan and Iraq.

It is a shame a good word like "liberal" has been misused in American English until it means the opposite of what it originally meant. I have not been happy with the word "conservative" and "libertarian" sounds a bit made-up. Even the old fashioned socialists would not like the Taliban, etc. Today's false liberals remind me of the Stalinists in the late 1930s who supported Hitler out of expediency because at the time Hitler and Stalin were temporarily working together to destroy the West.
