Should You Trust Your Makeup?

FOR decades, companies that make everything from after-shave to lip gloss have conducted safety testing on grooming products and shipped the cosmetics to stores to be sold to consumers, all with very little government involvement. And over the years, there have been few health or safety problems associated with the myriad grooming products and cosmetics on the market.

Nonetheless, momentum has been building for greater oversight of the chemicals in everyday products, with the European Union and California taking the lead in imposing new rules for monitoring what is in the perfumes, creams, nail polish and hair sprays that are sold.

The California Safe Cosmetics Act, which took effect on Jan. 1, requires cosmetics companies to tell state health authorities if a product contains any chemical on several government lists covering possible cancer-causing agents or substances that may harm the reproductive system.

State Senator Carole Migden, Democrat of San Francisco, said that such chemicals, even in trace amounts, should be removed from beauty products because they have been found to cause cancer or hormonal changes in lab animals.

“The bill mandates that manufacturers reveal potentially poisonous ingredients,” said Senator Migden, the bill’s author. “I hope that the bill will lead manufacturers to voluntarily eliminate suspect ingredients from cosmetics.”

The people of California deserve the government they vote for.

I am sure President Reagan is rolling in his grave at the emasculated California Republican Party.

"...potentially poisonous..."

like those light-up signs in Boston, we must eliminate anything that is potentially dangerous or possibly hazardous or things that might just be wrong. You never can tell.

Government oversight and regulation and above all authority over us will keep us safe and happy. (A gramme is worth a damme!)

You said it! It takes a lot of work and effort to turn a beautiful picturesque state with sunny weather AND skiing up north, into a place where people are trying to escape from.

Congratulations! The liberals pulled it off as only they can.

This is a real issue. Girls are reaching puberty sooner due to things like placenta in shampoo.

Why do we need placenta in shampoo? That is not only *nasty,* it is full of estrogen.

Probably has more to do with Phytoestrogen in soy based food products. (In, among other things, baby formula.) You can find it in cereal, meat extenders; faux hamburger(White Castle) and hidden in all sorts of foods. Also found in Flax seed.

You know, you guys have a great point, I never thought of it that way before. Thanks. From now on, if I even think there is a chance of something hurting me, I'm not going to risk it. I'll ask the government and the research scientists to step in and take care of it. Sometimes that takes too long though.

For example, you two MIGHT have sent a virus to my computer with your posts. I'm probably wrong, but I'm not going to take any chances. Shoot first and ask questions later. So sorry but...

Is that the guy/transexual from the Rocky Horror Picture Show?

I never saw a picture of it in black and white.

Being a girl, make-up has been a part of my life for a very long time! And I refuse to give it up! I've never suffered any harm from any of it!

It's only been a part of my life for the last week. My 3 year old daughter decided she wanted to put make up on Daddy a few days ago.

I don't enjoy it but a man has to do what a man has to do.

If women were dropping dead 5 or 6 years before men, instead of 5 or 6 years after them, then it would be easier to believe that make-up was hurting women.

No, no, no, no. See, you are thinking of this all wrong. As a normal human being with brains, you are asking yourself "Does this even pass the laugh test?" The answer is no, so you move on. Research scientists would be out of business if everyone had that attitude. Shame on you. They have a family and they need:
