US activist pushes 'terror-free' gas (You'll love the pic!)

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The first "terror-free" gas station was inaugurated this week in Omaha, Nebraska aiming to send a message to Middle Eastern oil producers thought to sponsor terrorism. The station in the central US state greets customers with large "terror-free" signs and the pumps proudly proclaim that the oil being drawn is "terror-free premium" or "terror-free super."

Messages plastered inside the station's convenience store drive home the message that it only sells oil from Canada and the United States and supports the war on terror.

"We know that when we go to the pumps we are sending our hard-earned dollars to a part of the world that wishes to destroy us," Joe Kaufman, who is behind the "Terror-Free Oil Initiative" (TFO) which runs the station, told AFP.

The TFO logo combines the twin towers of the New York City World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington, and designations for United Airlines flight 93 and three other aircraft which were hijacked and crashed into those buildings in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

"We created this initiative to make a statement to those gasoline companies that purchase their crude oil in the Middle East, that we as Americans are sick and tired of financing our own demise," Kaufman said.

He said his grass roots movement encourages stations that sign on to TFO to purchase their oil from Sinclair Oil Corporation, which generally only buys oil from the US and Canada.

Kaufman said he is well aware he is unlikely to make the major oil companies budge on imports from other producers, but is convinced that more gas stations throughout the country will join his movement in coming months.

"We're not under any illusion that we're going to make a dent in the oil market or in the oil or gasoline business, but we're just trying to make a statement," he said. "We believe in the war on terrorism and we're doing our small part as Americans to fight that war."

True, but it is at least a start towards getting the consumer to understand that the 'cost' of gas is not what they are paying at the pump.

No, I think it's an opportunity for people to "feel good about doing something for the cause" without really doing anything or paying any real price.

As a culture we're addicted to these kinds of solutions.

I like the idea but in concept wont work. Like the milk in the container in your fridge, it comes from many different cows by the time it got to you. The gas in every gas station's tanks comes from all over the world.

"feel good about doing something for the cause"

That will be the net effect for at least 98% of the market...but there will be that little small sliver that just might start to think...if only a tiny bit.

It's a start, and an attempt. I completely support it. Re: fungibility... one could say that about anything. For example, just because I don't use cocaine or meth or whatnot doesn't stop someone else from using it, and the dealers and producers still make their money, but I ain't contributing to it. (Now, Trappist monks on the other hand...) The Saudis might still make money, but they shouldn't off of us.

No, your analogy is off. The cocaine analogy is as follows: The Columbians and Bolivians supply cocaine to local US dealers. Those dealers mix the cocaine together. You don't like Bolivians, and one of the dealers says "Buy this cocaine, is is colombian".

Despite your intentions, you are still buying bolivian cocaine.

Even if the local dealers did seperate Colombian and Bolivian cocaine, your buying colombian only would still not do anyting to harm the bolivians if the cocaine is totally fungible. So, lets say before you bought colombian sometimes and bolivian sometimes. Now, you say yo just want colombian. The dealer doesn't care, he just sells someone else who used to be 50/50 all Bolivian.

What you don't buy, someone else will. So the terrorists will get their money anyway.

But we'll FEEL so much better about it!

But we'll FEEL so much better about it!

Which is obvious by the comments. People don't really care if it does anything, they just want to feel good about themselves. It's like people who drive Prius's.

Your post implies dishonesty on the part of TFO... if they're doing there best to only buy North American, and saying so...

I'd like to believe it's possible to buy only domestically produced oil, and we ought to do so when given the opportunity (and, if not, we ought to start demanding it!).

Yes, I made it using Paint (of all things). But I don't make any magnets or T-shirts. You can print it out and have some made, if you like.

Yes, I do imply dishonesty.

Well, I'd like to believe in Unicorns.
