Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has told US President George W. Bush by videolink that the first few days of their countries' joint security plan in Baghdad had been a great success.
"He told President Bush that the security plan had seen dazzling success during its first days and that the government will deal with every outlaw in a firm manner whatever group they belong to," according to his office on Friday.
Some Sunni Iraqis fear their Shiite prime minister might use the security plan as a cover to advance his own group's interests, but Maliki denies this, and cited the example of aid he said he was giving Sunnis in western Iraq.
"He said the sheikhs of the tribes in Anbar Province play a very important role in the hunt for Al-Qaeda and that the government will supply all kinds of support to these tribes and start reconstruction efforts," his office said.

General Petraus sat right there in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee and told them this, but being Senators, they had trouble listening because they were thinking of how to turn the Q&A session into a speech-making opportunity.
Yeah, well what about this?

You will find that also on DU where it is given even more credibility than you give it.
Part of the problem may be English is not his first language.
Ironically the Dem gains in the last election made a Bush policy success in Iraq more likely, because the Iraqis now understand that they have less than a a maximum of two years to get control of the situation before the Dems possibly get the Presidency, and the US troops are gone.
My son (Army) is on his way to Baghdad. Part of the surge. He's already in-theater but far outside of the city right now. Say hi if you see him.
President Bush will announce our objectives have been met, and is not leaving "unfinished business" for his successor. Plus, he'll get to give all the "mission accomplished" speeches to the returning troops, instead of the next President.
We're off to a good start with more sensible rules of engagement, and closing the borders with Iran and Syria. I can't wait to see how the rest of GEN Petraeus' plan unfolds. If executed properly, it will be the template to use against other insurgencies.
Sure will! I'll be looking for the Caribou nametag I guess. I wish him well. If it's any consolation it's rather quiet now.
As I just heard CHris Hitchens say in a different context (he was talking about Iran) --- "there are two clocks running......and one of them is running faster....."
With Iraq, there is the one clock of this news ( which might have been pushed to the forefront right now in order to undercut the OTHER clock, the Murtha plan, just out today, and the ongoing "let's be man enough to admit defeat" overarching Dem, Anti-Bush plan. The Dems need bad news, not good news. They need their clock to run faster, and be continually pushed in the face of the American public. They are of course totally HEEDLESS as to what the consequences would be of de-funding, re-deploying, whatever....but I'm sure they could even blame that on Bush.
If I saw the same presentation it was even more remarkable because the fallen American soldier was female.
As long as he doesnt tell the New York Times. You never know what they'll do with such information.

what bothers me is that we don't have a stated
'clear and hold' policy.
good guys move in, bad guys split,
good guys leave, bad guys return
the US military never learns
We were kicking Al Qaeda/Sunni ass all along. Now with 350,000 Iraqi security forces of ready to go, we kick Shiite militia ass.
I thought the same thing, and posted it on a leftie discussion board where I hang out. An enterprising leftie research guy made me eat some delicious crow:
So I guess that shows the danger of jumping to conclusions.
This war has been the greatest success in the history of the world if reported by an honest media rather than the political arm of the DNC.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
If history repeats itself Mookie may not get the "welcome wagon" treatment when he returns to Iraq.
That is precisely what is going on.
But fortunately the corrupted media does not control all the communications now as they did then.
Thanks.
He will be heading your way in a few weeks.
