No, that isn't what he said at all. And September, or the now stated by him OCTOBER, as to WHEN he will BEGIN TO THINK ABOUT
what he should do, is far too late to do anything.

Thank you.

Do you think we can keep this bumped so more people can see it?

"The carved head always points in the direction where the boat goes, BUT IT DOES NOT STEER THE BOAT."

...hmmm....???

We must have gotten it ALL WRONG in the Navy.

The Captain could most often be found on the bridge, directing the day's tasks.

No, I think your analogy might be more fitting to a parliamentary type of government. I sure want more out of MY president than a mere figurehead.....

"We must have gotten it ALL WRONG in the Navy. "
You served in the Viking Navy? Carved heads are somewhat archaic ornaments, you know. And as for "directing the day's tasks", one ex-naval officer james earl carter, if memory serves, was very good at it.
Directing the day's tasks is management. Leadership is something else. Sun Tsu wrote that the secret of a successful general was to have his soldiers die willingly. Shelling the Chinese military context out, it is to inspire extremely high degree of devotion [inspire and project, in contemporary lingo]. This is leadership. And managing the daily tasks is sergeantism. Leadership is like being the soul and personality of the place. An organization can have an unlimited number of managers, but only one leader at a time [unless organization suffers from split personality or leadership struggle].

---"For his part, the former congressman said he would decide by September whether to launch his own White House bid and join the crowded field."---

Important little bit that cannot be missed here:

He is no longer saying he will wait until September to decide - he is saying he will decide BY September.

Good news!!!!

"I saw something the other day where Brownback is attacking Romney. I mean, what a dumb way to spend your life."

I said the same thing, but not nearly as well as Newt.

Your attempt to impugn my service is lacking in purpose.

As for the Captain...I can't speak for other ships. All I know is that man was a master seaman and I saw him LEAD us through some darn sticky spots where men's lives were in the balance.

If I EVER had imagined that he was only a figure head and conducted myself in that fashion....I'd most likely been introduced to another part of the ship....the Captain's Mast.

Now the XO was quite another matter. He was SO disliked that there was a running joke about who was going to win the "Captain's Pussy Pot"....by throwing the cat overboard.

Unfortunately, if we have Newt for President, the Democrats are going to be able to mount a "Character Counts" campaign against us. At least Hillary! stuck with her philandering husband.
When Newt divorced his first wife, he had the papers delivered to her in the hospital while she recovered for an operation. Don't tell me the Democrats won't have a party with that... and don't tell me he wouldn't deserve it.

Sometimes, being smart ain't enough. Character does count and Newt has an issue here.

Quite a few FReepers should take note of this. We should work to overcome Hillary and the rest of the liberals. Not each other.

Take that a step further, actually.

We should not be trying to defeat Hillary, or even the Democrats. We should be trying to convince everyone that our ideas are the best.

We should not be squabbling but united against the common enemy - the Democrats.

Democrats aren't my enemy, per se,liberals are.

Heaven's to Betsy! If only Newt took his own advice!

If you can't distinquish between that comment and a political attack you shouldn't even be voting.

Disloyal? First of all, loyalty is not the first measure of a man. Secondly, in what way has Newt been "disloyal?" He's had some legitimate criticisms of President Bush from time to time, but not nearly as much as many other Republicans.

Yes, Newt's negatives are high, and that's a problem. They will likely go down as he begins to communicate his ideas, though.

Newt was one of the first people out of the camp saying we had to spend more money in New Orleans. So we did. Then a few months later when that doesn't go well he starts complaining that we're spending too much money.

He does this a lot and seems to think we all have amnesia or something and can't remember when he advocated different positions only to flip flop when the goals don't go according to plan.

As well, he's become Hillary's new best friend and that alone is suspicious.

"We should be trying to convince everyone that our ideas are the best."

Absolutely! Ideas of a movement transcend candidates always. However, it is necessary to have candidates who can articulate those ideas, live by them, and implement them. After reading the previous sentence I can only think of Ronald Reagan. I was a child while he was president and he even motivated me when I was in elementary school!
