Video taken during attack at Salt Lake City mall picks up shouting of "Allah Akbar" 3 times.
In Arabic, "Ya Allah" is probably closest to "Oh [my] God" but "Allahu akbar" (literally "God is great") can be used as a expression of surprise, much like "good God" in English.
Not when it's chanted by a muzzie holding a gun or bomb.
Obviously, you know that my objection is that in America, God means the Christian God.
If you want the American language to equate God with Allah , you can do that.
There is, in fact, a difference worth defining.
You're welcome.
Understanding that this man is not Arab, the words Allahu Akbar, if he said it, would be profound.
Not as profound as you might think. Arabic exclamations have been borrowed in the languages of non-Arab Muslims, just as "Hallelujah" has been borrowed into English because of the Church.
Wouldn't I look stupid if someone was using the equivalent of "Good God" and I was freaking?
"Good God" would be one translation. As an exclamation, its meaning is heavily context-dependent. And as in all languages, this makes a difference. James Brown's "Good God!" had a very different meaning than my grandmother's expression of hushed disbelief.
The meaning of the Arabic word "Allah" is the same as the English proper noun "God."
If you want to believe otherwise, you can do that. If you want to exclude Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Baha'i, etc from the American language, you can do that.
Just don't expect the rest of us to go along.
Note that even if the killer said Allah Akbar, it does not prove this was an act of terrorism. Further note that the FBI may not have been aware of this video when they declared this was not an act of terrorism.
It is reasonable to make inferences from this evidence, though.
Well, this is why it matters.
Jews and Christians worship God. The others worship something else.
If you want to live in the kind of country you get when you worship the god of Muslims, Mormons, Baha'i, etc; then, be prepared for your women to live in slavery and to live in a mud hut.
Terror At Trolley Square, SLC [Home Video with AUDIO OF SHOUTS OF "ALLAH AKBAR"]
It's really a good thing that our president will be bringing 7,000 iraqis to live on welfare in the USA.............. right?
Many Jews would disagree.
Send to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity! I would really like a sound engineer to clean this up and play it for more Americans who are still being fed PC ambivalence about a confused yoot by a so-called "thorough" FBI investigation.
Perhaps it is in Arabic; but the language of Bosnia is Serbo-Croatian, which is nothing like Arabic.
Actually, I was asking about Arabic.
I live in MI.
The funny thing about this is that I originally heard it the second time but was not sure. In fact I entered this in my daily journal for yesterday:
KUTV Channel Two local CBS affiliate here in SLC released a video taken by a person hiding in a gift shop inside of Trolley Square during the shootout with the shooter. I listened to it very closely and found the Islamic war cry, Allahu Akbar repeated three times. There are more gunshots and then I thought I heard the war cry another two times; however, I was not sure about the last two times.
Now, others have heard both times in their listening to the tapes; and, I said nothing to anyone about the second war cries! People have been kind enough to use audio editing software to buffer and clean the audio up and have heard it. Many have heard the first time it is shouted, but few have heard the second time.
The end of the whole matter for me is that it was on the tape and it was not just me thinking I heard it. I really did hear it
As for "Allah Akbar" being equivalent to OMG - we have to admit one BIG difference: When was the last time someone yelled OMG as they were flying planes into buildings, chopping off heads, blowing up school children OR using any of the many ways of slaughtering innocent men women and children that Jihadis seem to see as a holy sacrament.
How do you see the timer? I can't see one using Firefox.
That said, I didn't hear any Allahu akbars. It sounds much more like "come on up"
The sylabols don't match IMO. 1-2-3, 1-2-3 (come-on-up)compared to 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 (al-la ak-bar, al-la ak-bar).
I certainly don't discount this act as a terrorism event though.
