Duncan Hunter's Long-Shot Conservative Bid
RealClearPolitics ^ | George Will

WASHINGTON -- When Bob Hunter, a Riverside, Calif., businessman, would hear of a conservative's campaign that needed volunteers, he would pile his family into the station wagon and drive off to ring doorbells. Hunter's son Duncan grew up believing in retail politics.

When Hunter returned home after serving as an alternate Goldwater delegate at the 1964 Republican convention in San Francisco, he told Duncan about chatting with another alternate, an amiable fellow, some actor, named Reagan. Who two years later was elected governor. Duncan learned early on about rapid upward mobility in politics.

In 1969, he dropped out of college, joined the army and was sent to Vietnam. From there he mailed his pay to a friend who purchased for him an island in Idaho's Snake River, where Duncan farmed after his discharge. Then another friend said a San Diego law school would admit him without a college degree. In 1980 he was a lawyer with a storefront office in San Diego's Hispanic community when his father walked in and told him he could be a congressman. Never mind, his father said, that this district was only 29 percent Republican. Reagan was at the top of the ticket.

Duncan says his Baptist minister, respecting the separation of church and state, told parishioners they should vote for the Reagan of their choice. They distributed 400,000 Duncan brochures. Today Duncan is in his 14th term representing eastern San Diego County. Three weeks ago he formally launched his presidential candidacy.

Why does he think he can become the first House member elected president since James Garfield in 1880? Why does he think he can do better than the two strongest House candidates in recent elections?...

"For some candidates,'' Hunter says, "the conservative constituency is an inconvenience. For me, it is my hope.''

My only worry is that (according to the article) with DH's candidacy having only so far raised a mere $300,000 in "pledges", that by March 1st there may not be any campaign left for me on to bash!

Well, he's only been up and running for a couple weeks. We'll have to see how they do with fund-raising. If in the next six months it becomes clear the campaign is going nowhere, it'll be time to reassess. But until then...

Full steam ahead!

It sure is nice being able to support someone for president who doesn't have to become a conservative but has been one his whole life!

AMEN!!!!

I am sorry there is not enough positive to say about Rudy or Mitt that the anti Hunter bunch have to keep it up with their 12 yrar old mentality of bashing the better candidate.

It also says the Rudy & Mitt bunch are insecure. If they think Hunter doesn't have a chance, why the constant bashing
and vanity threads.

I am glad Rudy, Mitt or McCain won't be the nominee
so I won't have to vote for them.

What happens because of the compressed primaries if a candidate is nominated and the base angrily rise up in protest? Like what happened with Harriet Meiers?

More like the 2006 election. For all the complaints, there was a purpose to smoke-filled back rooms. Then again, how likely would it have been that a Democrat smoke-filled back room would have accepted Bill Clinton in 1992?

I honestly thought George Will was literate, but this is such a terrible construction that I've got to question his sobriety.

"It's also vital that we keep all three heads of the Rudy McRomney hydra in the race as long as possible. With them splitting the liberal Republican and "politics over principles" vote, a conservative dark horse like Hunter could sneak up on them and beat them in a 4-way race"

And they have all the money to beat each other up. Hunter will remain under the radar screen for awhile.

I wonder if Rudy McRomney will attack Hunter by accusing him of being a conservative, thereby not being able to beat Hillary!

To be honest, the Democrat party would have been better off if they would have dumped him at their convention. As much as he is revered by democrats, he was not good for their party or this country. He was and still is an embarrassment to decent folks.

There's a message in all of this; with the primaries moving up so far in the calendar, there should be a significant of delegate votes left open at the convention. That would allow for any changes in mood between a primary and a convention. But, that would bring back the back room decision.

The next step for the professional election profit makers is to move the conventions up the calendar, so the final campaign can start in June or May instead of August or Septmeber. That way, they can flood the media with advertising and keep the election profits coming in, with no concern for the well-being of the country.

The problem that I have with this theory is that Rep. Duncan Hunter isn't the only "true" conservative running for President on the GOP side. There's still Rep. Tom Tancredo (already labeled by the mainstream media as a "one issue candidate" and a conservative gadfly, has many confrontations with other Republicans including the President on many issues besides illegal immigration, and has said things that bother many people), Newt Gingrich (despite all of his negative personal baggage and questions about whether he's fit for an executive political position), Rep. Ron Paul (who is more libertarian than conservative on many issues, considered a kook by many other conservatives, and many other conservatives still like him anyways), former Va. Governor Jim Gilmore (despite increasing taxes while Governor in Va. and his struggles with Va. Democrats and Va. RINO Republicans), John Cox (Who?), Michael Savage (thin-skinned and not much of a temperament whenever criticized on any issue), and possibly many others who may end up entering the GOP Presidential race later and maybe have a serious impact among conservative voters. Conservatives must also seriously understand and not ever rule out the possibility that someday, some "third political party/Independent candidate" for President may end up running that excites enough of the conservative voters base to the point that it ends up causing trouble for the eventual GOP candidate for President. All of these possibilities are there in '08 and/or beyond. Rep. Duncan Hunter seriously needs to be prepared to differentiate himself well against everyone that I have mentioned here.

And thanks again for giving me my tagline. I love that "rapid upward mobility" in politics lesson that Duncan learned from Reagan.

Unfortunately the American electorate is not by majority "decent folks." If he were eligible most polls show Clinton winning a 3rd term in 2000 and even in 2008 if eligible today. Some Democrats like to blame their '94 loss of the House on Clinton but the liberals lack of total control of media (thank you Rush Limbaugh), a powerful well communicated message (thank you Newt Gingrich) and 40 years of no results lost them the House. Clinton certainly was no help in '94 but by '96 he has obviously recovered his mojo.

That's my point. The democrat voters have sold their soul to the devil because of that man. They will need a miracle cleansing to get it back. Unfortunately all their current leaders have adopted the same mindset.
