Cheney Says Bush Will Veto Pro-Union Bill
The Politico ^ | Februrary 14, 2007

Posted on 02/14/2007 1:45:28 PM PST by RWR8189

President Bush will veto pending legislation aimed at boosting union strength, Vice President Cheney told National Association of Manufacturers members at a Wednesday breakfast meeting to kick off the group’s lobbying efforts.

The “Employee Free Choice Act,” currently making its way through the House, would change the process of union elections. Under the measure, if a majority of workers in a workplace sign cards authorizing a union, then the workers would get a union. Under current law, even when a majority of workers ask for union representation, their employers can force them to undergo an election process administered by the National Labor Relations Board. Supporters contend the proposal would strengthen unions against unfair management tactics. Opponents warn that the measure is an effort by unions to exert undue influence after years of waning support.

The manufacturers’ coalition seeks to kill the bill, among a list of four legislative priorities for the 110th Congress. The House Education and Labor Committee is scheduled to mark up the legislation Wednesday.

Cheney, who donned a pink tie for the Valentine’s Day address, also said economic growth would grow from private sector efforts, not the government.

“Nobody can sit in an office in Washington, D.C. and decide to create prosperity,” he said.

The vice president defended the Bush tax cuts as fueling the economy’s recovery over the past five years. During his 20-minute speech the crowd applauded Cheney’s vow that the Bush administration would continue to push for the end of the so-called “death tax.”

Pat Cleary, senior vice president for communications at NAM, told the crowd of about 200 manufacturers that their industry drives the broader economy, contributing 12 percent of the nation’s GDP and three-fifths of research and development.

“We’re not asking for a handout,” he said. “What we want is for government to get out of our way.”

In addition to blocking the union proposal, other NAM legislative priorities include energy policy overhaul, making permanent a research and development tax credit and free trade, Cleary said.

But he warned the crowd to be wary of promises extended by legislators.

“They’re going to tell you they’re friends of ours,” he said. “Some of them aren’t telling the truth.”

Tiffany Adams, head of corporate and public affairs for NAM, said about 600 members traveled to Washington for the three-day lobbying effort, the fifth time NAM has hosted the series since 1999.

Unions are completely vulnerable to Affirmative Action charges...arguments that can sway moderates in Blue States to become anti-union.

--Black workers were more likely to be union members than were white, Asian, or Hispanic workers.

And, if I remember correctly, there were some instances of the unions handing out cards lying to employees that signing them only gave permission for the union to come in and do a sales pitch, when in reality that card was the vote. If enough employees signed them, bingo, they were unionized. IIRC

The purposes, and principles, of American labor unions are identical in theory, and in operation, with those of the United States itself.

Those who hate unions but claim to love the United States, haven't given enough thought to the matter.

The top 20 highest paid union leaders are all White Males.

Ergo, unions are vulnerable to Affirmative Action arguments...they have a glass ceiling that prevents Hispanics and Blacks (who are in unions in higher proportions than Whites) from reaching the top tier of union leadership ranks.

"Here's a fact: Bush didn't do most of the things you listed. He just signed the bill."

You are hopelessly nitpicking. Signing the right bills is his job.

From post #27: "President Bush signed the workplace verification bill to prevent hiring of illegal Aliens
S. 1685, the Basic Pilot Extension Act of 2003, was signed by President Bush on December 3, 2003.
It extends for five years the workplace employment eligibility authorization pilot programs created in 1996. It expands the pilot programs from the original five states to all 50 states."

I won't hold my breath.. The ink in his veto pen is likely dried up by now.

A bill that accomplished the exact same thing just passed in Colorado. We have a Democrat controlled House and Senate now with a Democrat Governor. The very first bill out of the chute was a pro-union bill that would have done away with the secret election process. Despite howls of protest from business leaders, it sailed through both houses and went to the governor's desk where.... (wait for it!)... he vetoed it! This happened last Friday. I heard it on the radio and nearly drove off the road!
This must be the agenda for Labor- do away with the secret ballots. I guess they figure if they can stick to intimidation, they might succeed.

Thanks for all that info! I knew most of it already but tend to forget all that he has accomplished. I get real tired of all the Bush bashing that goes on here, especially since the last election. I will remain a Bush supporter until the end of his presidency. His accomplishments speak for themselves.

They should have supported GW Bush, too. I will never understand why the Teamsters despise tax cuts, but they do!

By the way, I am a Teamster member.

In theory, communism should work pretty well - but it doesn't.

If the unions claim that there are some illegal aliens in the union, Bush will sign it in a heartbeat.

Unions helped to bring many blue collar workers out of poverty and fought for safe workplaces and medical coverage for them. Are some unions crooked? Probably, but so is our government.

By threatening to veto the legislation, pro-Mexico Bush is again sucking up to big business companies who want more and more (profitable for them) slave labor from Mexico, giving the finger to American workers.

Bush has been a one man wrecking ball, a globalist puppet who has never done an honest day's hard work in his life. He cares nothing about American workers, and as his time left in the White House decreases, it will only get worse.

I've never regretted a vote as much as the vote I cast for him in 2000.

The labor movement has been taken over by the public employee unions.

You spout nothing but childish, uneducated nonsense.

Vetoing legislation that would, if not vetoed, switch the union voting process from private to public has **NOTHING**...do you freaking hear me...NOTHING to do with Mexico or your fantastical "slave labor" red herring.

Get a freaking life.
