7,000 Iraqi Refugees To Be Permitted Into U.S.

The Bush administration is planning to allow about 7,000 Iraqi refugees into the country over the next year, compared with 463 Iraqis who have been allowed to enter the U.S. since the war began, the State Department is announcing.

The United States has been working with international organizations to aid Iraqi refugees who have been resettling in neighboring countries of Jordan and Syria. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is asking for $60 million in aid from nations around the world. The U.S. will pledge $18 million in new funding.

Thousands of translators, aides to Americans and others fleeing religious persecution and violent reprisal have been seeking escape from Iraq since the sectarian violence picked up a year ago.

Last week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced a new task force to coordinate assistance for refugee assistance to be spearheaded by Undersecretary of State Paula Dobriansky.

In fiscal year 2005, the United States made available 70,000 slots for refugees worldwide; 53,000 of those slots were filled, but only 202 Iraqis were allowed into the United States. Another 50 Iraqis and Afghans were admitted through a limited Pentagon program for translators who have worked with U.S military.

Why not?

Because we have more immigrants than we can assimilate now.

Are you an overpopulationist?

No.

The United States can support a population much larger than 300 million, in any case.

The US is a fully developed country, and the Age of Immigration has passed. We're no longer in a nation-building/expansion mode, we no longer need swarms of immigrants.

And if feathers are going to get ruffled anyway, Enlarged United States of America.

Not going to happen the way you propose.

A (much) larger population will help the United States keep its lead over the PRC and India.

The PRC and India are gaining on the US because the US is allowing it (offshoring and outsourcing).

I understand that where national and world matters are concerned there are going to be dissenting opinions.

I also understand that the way in which #43 has been limited by the DNC and their propoganda - let's call it what it is - is appalling.

When I see the hate-spewing Clinton, Pelosi, Boxer, Olympia Snowe, it makes me cringe that I am of the same gender. These people aren't about 'the people' anymore. They want control. Power.

What nonsense. Our quality of life is suffering because of too many people already in this country. Traffic jams are getting out of hand in my area. Violent home invasion gangs, made up mostly of immigrants and illegal aliens, terrorize the less affluent in my state. Our historic battlefields and scenic areas have been destroyed for tacky housing developments, parking lots, and ugly urban sprawl.

Crowding can have many serious consequences (see Tom Wolfe's article "Sliding down the behavioral sink").

It is one thing to import noted scientists to this country. But we do not need masses of people from enemy nations who will further pose a security risk and/or just want our welfare. Why bring the problems of Iraq to this country?

According to what I hear we are woefully short of arab speakers and translators. I hope at least some of these guys will be of use.

My perception is that Sunni and Shia religious nuts have been slugging it out since the 8th century. Of course they will forget all about it once they visit Disney World and Universal City Walk.

But they agree on what they should do to Infidels like you and me,if they want paradise with Allah.

We were never at arms length, but we will be in the future, as more Muslims come into this Infidel cesspool called America. - tom

wait until they start the beheadings - there are many Americans that still don't believe in murder. I really don't think it will become that popular

"But it only took 18 of them to kill 3000 Americans!!!!!!"

There were no Iraqis among the 9/11 terrorists. Those monsters were from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates.
Perhaps you meant that all Muslims look alike to you?

According to Bush, Christians and Muslims worship the same god... From that mistake, you can follow the rest of his decisions (he's the decider)...

I assumed that they were naturally lazy and didn't want to work when they could drain the city's welfare budget.
