The Bush administration is planning to allow about 7,000 Iraqi refugees into the country over the next year, compared with 463 Iraqis who have been allowed to enter the U.S. since the war began, the State Department is announcing.
The United States has been working with international organizations to aid Iraqi refugees who have been resettling in neighboring countries of Jordan and Syria. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is asking for $60 million in aid from nations around the world. The U.S. will pledge $18 million in new funding.
Thousands of translators, aides to Americans and others fleeing religious persecution and violent reprisal have been seeking escape from Iraq since the sectarian violence picked up a year ago.
Last week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced a new task force to coordinate assistance for refugee assistance to be spearheaded by Undersecretary of State Paula Dobriansky.
In fiscal year 2005, the United States made available 70,000 slots for refugees worldwide; 53,000 of those slots were filled, but only 202 Iraqis were allowed into the United States. Another 50 Iraqis and Afghans were admitted through a limited Pentagon program for translators who have worked with U.S military.

Screen them well, but it is the right thing to do. Hopefully, many Christians amongst them.
Just screen them meticulously before accepting their asylum.
will they be Shia or Sunni? Will we put the Shia in the north and the sunni in the west? Or north and south. After the Iraqi settle in do we have the hospital resources do deal with the maimings from the bombings? Isn't our healthcare strained enough? How will we ever deal with all the killings?

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
I see the media is working its evil magic very successfully.
I've got a bit of insider news for you. Not all Iraqis are terrorists. In fact, the vast majority of them aren't.
Oh, and most of them don't really care who's Sunni and who's Shia.
Just put em in Oklahoma City again and wait for the fireworks.
What if your community took in half of them, like that town in Ohio that ended up with 30,0000 Somalis who are now telling the original inhabitants how to live? I don't know why we have to take in every last loser and piece of human dreck from the entire world. I thought we were over there fighting so they would have a chance to live in a decent society on their native soil.
hey I understand providing for war refugees - but sure sounds dangerous
Check them out VERY carefully.
From a relatively urban area with a fair amount of Muslims (granted, not as much as Dearborn, Michigan, but.....) and other non-Christians; so far, society seems to keep on running.
yes the media has done their magic. My perception is that Sunni and Shia religious nuts have been slugging it out since the 8th century. Of course they will forget all about it once they visit Disney World and Universal City Walk.
Where I live (in DC metro area) there are thousans of Muslims and the feds have arrested hundreds for terrorist activity. I am thinking about starting a list of them.
Horrible news. After the muslim shooting incident at Trolly Square in SLC, I don't look forward to more muslim hatred towards the citizens of our country. Bush is as disgusting as Clinton.
Also, D.C. is a prime target, being the capital and all. Any group of Islamofascists would have Washington high on their list of targets.
A list sounds like a very good idea. There's a nonprofit in Jersey that says they provide scholarships for Saudi students here. Like I believe that.
"...a tiny % of our population.."
Maybe so, but I doubt if you'd approve of them moving enmasse to your neighborhood.
America just hit population 300 million. Number 300 million is the son of immigrants. We don't need any more immigrants.
