Barack Obama looked as if he needed a smoke and he needed it bad.
So there he was, trying to meet the deep, inexhaustible needs of both Iowa activists and the global press behemoth on his first swing across the state, while giving up cigarettes.
He was a tad testy.
Ive been chewing Nicorette all day long, he told reporters at a press conference in Ames on Sunday, where he was getting irritated at suggestions that he lacked substance and at the specter of his vanishing privacy.
The Illinois senator didnt have on an implacable mask of amiability, as Hillary did in Iowa. He didnt look happily in his element, like Bill Clinton.
Senator Obamas body language was loose and hes so slender his wedding band looked as if it was slipping off but there was a wariness in his dark eyes.
He is backed up by a strong, smart wife and a professional campaign team, but he doesnt have a do-whatever-it-takes family firm with contract killers and debt collectors, like Bush Inc. and Clinton Inc.
He sounded self-consciously pristine at times, as if he was too refined for the muck of politics.
After talking to high school journalists, he took a sniffy shot at the loutish reporters who were merely whispering wheres the beef: Take some notes, guys, thats how its done.
He doesnt lack confidence, but hes so hung up on being seen as thoughtful that he sometimes comes across as too emotionally detached and cerebral with crowds yearning for an electric, visceral connection. J.F.K. mixed cool with fire.
For a man who couldnt wait to inject himself into the national arena, and who has spent so much time writing books about himself, the senator is oddly put off by press inquisitiveness.

It looks like it's going to be "ok" to criticize Obama if you're a liberal, like Dowd, but not if you're a conservative, like Howard. Some things never change....
Dowd has this thing about smoking. Remember when she described Anne as "that tough-talking, chain-smoking"?
He is backed up by a strong, smart wife and a professional campaign team, but he doesnt have a do-whatever-it-takes family firm with contract killers and debt collectors, like Clinton Inc.
This is not very pro-Clinton. I guess she means it sarcastically. Who are the contract killers she speaks of?
Why did you post a picture of Catherine Zeta-Jones???
Better that than the pharm sponsorship Dole landed.
Are you sure you've been here since 2001?
You are new to MoDowd threads, aren't ya?
Last time I paid for a woman to tickle my fancy, she was lot prettier than this; maybe I need to get drunk and loose with my money before I can see how this ends.
Select N.Y.Times???
I guess I'm clueless WRT Mo-Do threads.
What's the significance of the CZ-J pic?
Yes, I've been here that long, and then some.
Explanation of the Dowd/Douglas connection: by Miss Marple- 2/11/03
Ms. Dowd was escorted around New York and DC for many months by one Michael Douglas of Hollywood fame and fortune. She got to go to all the best parties, was photographed for the tabloids, and was picking out a gown to wear at the Oscars. Of course, Michael had become interested in her during Clinton's impeachment, when she had written some very anti-Clinton columns. After a few weeks of the Michael treatment, she began to write anti-Starr, ant-Newt columns, ignoring Clinton.
Then Clinton was acquitted by the Senate. In an amazing coincidence, Michael Douglas dropped Ms. Dowd like a hot potato, and instead picked up a hot tomato, Catherin Zeta-Jones, who subsequently bore him a son and they were married.
Ms. Dowd cannot get over her tragic loss. Her columns are increasingly anti-Bush, in the hope of impressing her lost love, Michael.
Why am I picturing this guy in the WH and running to the shipping/receiving dock to smoke a butt?
Thanks. I remember now.
"Barack Obama looked as if he needed a smoke and he needed it bad."
Mo Do looks as if she needs a man and needs it bad.
The Dowd finally admits that the Clintons are deadly? What's up, did she finally discover Alamo Girl's list???
Aah, but she has to claim Bush has the same sort of killers doing his bidding, also? So that the Clinton's once again, escape responsibility?
Other than trying to claim that the WTC catastrophe was "Bush's fault", as so many of the shallow minded do, what other accusation against him, is there? WHO was killed? Where and why? Can the Dowd answer that? If not, then why is she accusing the President of the United States of MURDER?
With the Clintons, we have long lists, literally dozens of people, with piles of incriminating evidence to go along with it. Hmm, now just what was that girl's name, who was shot in a Georgetown Starbucks during a supposed attempted robbery, in which not a thing or dollar were taken? She was the one who Linda Tripp warned Monika about, as in, 'you don't want to end up like her...'. Which I believe, is very much a part of why the infamous blue dress, was never washed.
Oh, that's gonna leave a mark. Actually, two marks.....
"he sometimes comes across as too emotionally detached and cerebral..."
Wasn't that the excuse they cooked up for Kerry?
Snobbish, intellectually vacant and self-centered is more like it....
