news of the long war

Thread 2

Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, our nation has fought a global war against violent extremists who use terrorism as their weapon of choice, and who seek to destroy our free way of life. Our enemies seek weapons of mass destruction and, if they are successful, will likely attempt to use them in their conflict with free people everywhere. Currently, the struggle is centered in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we will need to be prepared and arranged to successfully defend our nation and its interests around the globe for years to come. DOD

Our enemies include all the Muslims who dream of knocking Western Civilization off its perch atop humanity’s dung heap. Islam is fractured into any number of sects, tribes and ethnic groups, but the dream of destroying us cuts across all the fault lines. Islamic terrorists are merely the tip of a very large spear.

J. Peter Mulhern, the American Thinker, September 18

The determination behind that fight is real, the hatred is real, and the excuses for doing this are very real in the minds of those who have decided to walk that path. We can respond in two ways: Try to ignore or negotiate with people who do not want to negotiate in good faith, because what they want is our destruction, or to stand up against the darkness of those who see all of us, our way of life, our culture and our aspirations as something worth eliminating.

Either: "And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Or: "With vigilance, determination, courage, we will defeat the enemies of freedom, and we will leave behind a more peaceful world for our children and our grandchildren." GW Bush.

Here's where I will post news and info about the Long War. Let me know if you're interested.

the AP version:

TEHRAN, Iran - A bomb explosion killed at least 18 members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards in southeastern Iran, the state-run news agency reported Wednesday.

A passenger car loaded with explosives stopped in front of their bus near Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan Province, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

“This blind terrorist operation led to the martyrdom of 18,” IRNA quoted a Guards commander, Qasem Rezaei, as saying.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The explosion occurred around 6:30 a.m. in Ahmadabad district on the outskirts of Zahedan, IRNA said.

The passenger car stopped in the middle of the road, forcing the bus loaded with Guards to stop. The car’s occupants fled on motorbikes seconds before it exploded, IRNA said.

Zahedan and its surroundings, which lie near Iran’s borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, have been the scene of clashes between police and drug smugglers.

Eighteen members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards have been killed after a car bomb hit their bus in southeastern Iran.

Qassem Rezaie, a Revolutionary Guard commander, told Iran's official news agency on Wednesday: "In this thoughtless operation, 18 citizens of Zahedan were martyred."

Witnesses in the city of Zahedan said motorcyclists had shot at the bus to force it to stop.

A spokesman in the Zahedan governor's office confirmed the incident but said he was still waiting for figures on the number killed. He said two people had been arrested.

IRNA's correspondent in Zahedan said witnesses saw people placing a booby-trapped car in the path of the bus and detonated the explosives when the bus drew near.

Sadr aides say cleric still in Iraq

Excerpt -

BAGHDAD, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr is still in Iraq and has not left for Iran, several of his aides said on Wednesday, after American officials suggested he may have departed to avoid an offensive against militants.
The conflicting reports over the anti-American cleric's whereabouts came after Iraq said on Tuesday it would close its borders with Iran and Syria and lengthen a night curfew in Baghdad to try to curb unrelenting violence in the capital.

Four Sadr aides said he was still in Iraq, with some saying he was in the holy Shi'ite city of Najaf but had reduced public appearances for "security reasons". They did not elaborate.

"He is now in Iraq," Nassar al-Rubaei, head of the Sadrist bloc in Iraq's parliament, said without giving further details.

French police arrest 11 terror suspects
French police have arrested 11 terror suspects in the Paris and southern Toulouse regions, nine of whom are suspected of having ties to Al-Qaeda, the interior ministry said Wednesday.

The first arrests took place at Orly airport in Paris on Tuesday when two men were detained on their return from abroad, said a ministry statement. Nine others were subsequently arrested.

A source close to the case earlier said the 11 are suspected of being part of a network supporting insurgents in Iraq.

Office Of Mohammad Khatami Raided

By Safa Haeri

February 13, 2007

Tehran, 12 Feb. (IPS) The office of former reformist president of Iran Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Khatami has been “raided” overnight by unidentified people who have taken away all the computers, documents, fax machines and other equipments at the “Baran” and the International Centre for Dialogue among Cultures and Civilisations, it was reported on Monday 12 February 2007.

“When employees at Baran (Foundation for Freedom, Development and Progress of Iran and the International Institute for Dialogue Between Cultures and Civilizations entered their offices on Monday morning, they found out that the floor is littered with papers, all computers, fax machines, scanners and other equipments and documents are missing”, a spokesman for Baran reported, adding that “obviously, the doors of the offices were broken”.

Founded by Mr. Khatami, both Baran and the Centre for Dialogue are NOG’s promoting understanding and discussions between representatives of different cultures, religions and civilizations.

Iranian independent and reformist media, including the semi independent students news agency or the daily E’temad Melli briefly reported the incident, adding that the Police is “looking in the incident”, no other media in Iran mentioned the burglary.

Although other people close to Mr. Khatami have been subject this kind of “theft”, like Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Ali Abtahi, his outspoken deputy who’s portable telephone was taken away or Abdollah Ramezanzadeh, the official spokesman of his Government, whom the computer had disappeared, but this is the first time that his own office has been “visited” by burglars.

Former Mossad chief: Assassinate Ahmadinejad

Iranian president 'says he wants to die a martyr so he should be sent to heaven,' Meir Amit says

Aaron Klein, WND Published: 02.14.07, 13:33 / Israel News

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should "be made to disappear from the arena," Meir Amit, a former director of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, advocated in an exclusive interview with WND.

Amit, one of the most esteemed figures in the Israeli intelligence establishment, said while he was director of the Mossad from 1963 to 1968 he regularly argued against the assassination of world leaders. But he said the case of Ahmadinejad is different.

"Ahmadinejad is the pusher of all the Muslim world toward fanaticism and extremism. In his case, he should be made to disappear from the arena. He has said he wants to become a shahid, a martyr, so I think he should get his wish and be sent to heaven," Amit said.
