Sen. Barack Obama, all of 25 months removed from the Illinois state legislature, announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States on Saturday - and immediately began trading harsh words with the leader of one of America's oldest and most reliable allies.
In the process, the freshman senator revealed truly breathtaking naiveté.
Obama more or less sparked the exchange two weeks ago by introducing legislation mandating a total U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq by March 2008.
The senator is entitled to his views, of course. As is Australian Prime Minister John Howard - who said Sunday that the proposal would have al Qaeda leaders in Iraq "praying as many times as possible" for Obama to be elected president in 2008.
In turn, Obama said he was flattered "that one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world started attacking me the day after I announced" for president.
Howard's standing in this debate derives from the fact that Australia once again has troops deployed with U.S. forces in a war zone - as it did in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and Somalia.
Indeed, the notion that Howard is no more than "one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world" stunningly understates a political, economic and security relationship that extends back to the 19th century - and obtains to this day.
That Obama doesn't already know this - and respect it - gives deeper meaning to the term "not ready for prime time."
But it gets worse. .................

how's he going to dela with our enemies?
Appeasement and accommodation, the left's foreign policy.
I'd like to see more about his connections to organized crime and the Daley machine. The Dem party is a criminal enterprise, imho and its latest scam is the carbon exchange in Chicago.
An FR search using the keyword Rezko
Then let him alone to be at peace with the world.
I see he got a typical Harvard education. In general their ignorance of the real world is breathtaking.
America's ally not just George Bush's.
$$$$$$
This is the bottom line problem with the Democrat party these days. They have divorced themselves from any loyalty to America, but only have loyalty to their party.
What a great tagline!
Dead.
There was an expose about his father a couple of weeks ago. It tracked down his career in Kenya after he left Barak and his mother. It portrayed a drunken womanizer and corrupt pol. dick Morris claims that Hillary's private eyes must have done the research for it.
The Prime Minister should simply ignore the clowns.
The issue is not the issue. Issues are weapons. This is but one of thousands of cuts. Anything the Prime Minister says will become yet another "issue."
"Never give in -- never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."
Never give in to enemies and / or clowns.
Their only issue is the humiliation of U.S. and allied forces, "Bring it all down, man."
Then one down, more to go.
The Democrat Party. The gift that keeps on giving. My cup of schadenfreude will runneth over :)
It doesn't matter. The media love fest goes on unabated. People magazine just ran a multi-page suckup article. And, no, I don't subscribe.
From the NY Post editorial:
[Obama]
As opposed to Howard, who gets it: "I hold the strongest possible view that it is contrary to the security interests of this country for America to be defeated in Iraq," Howard said.
"Let me make it perfectly clear, if I hear a policy being advocated that is contrary to Australia's security interests, I will criticize it."
Good for him.

Many Americans are not only deficient in knowledge of history but also geography. Obama cannot make this lack of knowledge excuse, however, about Australia. He actually lived in Indonesia, which just happens to be the most populous Muslim country in the world, and which sits on top of the island continent of Australia. Talk about understanding Australia's security interests. Wow!!!
But that's exactly how Democrats view the world. To them there is no United States of America -- there's only a country they control or their true enemies control...their true enemies being their internal political opposition and anyone who supports that opposition. They have no sense of America as country, only as an entity they can control for their own purposes of wealth and power. The country doesn't matter to them, it's just a means to the end: power and control.
Loved your home page, brwnsuga. Would that be one hand clapping? :)
Guess it's about time for me to put my bumper sticker on my rear window: "We Have a Dream Condoleezza Rice for President 2008". That would be across from my Ronald Reagan one: "America has no small dreams"--if I can find it! It's tucked safely away...somewhere.
If Condi was a Democrat the MSM would have her on 24/7. Oh that's right, they don't know what a lady is. Everyone should read "Condi" to realize what a phenomenal woman she is--her background is truly astounding. We are blessed to have her as our Secretary of State.
Obama is a hollow media creation. He is clearly siding with America's enemies.
But he is "black"! Doesn't that count for anything?!
Richardson has spent nearly his entire career as a public servant. A Democrat from New Mexico, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1983 and served until January 1997. As a congressman he was chief deputy Democratic whip and sat on the Commerce, Intelligence, and the Resource committees. In February 1997 he became the U.S. ambassador to the UN, the first Hispanic to hold the position. Known as a skilled troubleshooter, Richardson traveled to such hot spots as North Korea, Iraq, Cuba, and Sudan, where he successfully negotiated the release of American hostages. Richardson also mediated discussions between Zaire's former president Mobutu and rebel leader Laurent Kabila, which resulted in the fairly peaceful transfer of power in the country that is now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.
In 1998, President Clinton appointed him secretary of energy. In that position, in which he served until 2001, he set aside more than 20,000 acres for wildlife preservation, helped to stem rising oil prices, and ushered in a program to remove from the Colorado River 10 tons of radioactive material.
In 2002 Richardson successfully ran for the governorship of New Mexico.
Richardson received a BA from Tufts in 1970 and a MA from Tuft's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1971.
