Sen. Barack Obama, all of 25 months removed from the Illinois state legislature, announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States on Saturday - and immediately began trading harsh words with the leader of one of America's oldest and most reliable allies.
In the process, the freshman senator revealed truly breathtaking naiveté.
Obama more or less sparked the exchange two weeks ago by introducing legislation mandating a total U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq by March 2008.
The senator is entitled to his views, of course. As is Australian Prime Minister John Howard - who said Sunday that the proposal would have al Qaeda leaders in Iraq "praying as many times as possible" for Obama to be elected president in 2008.
In turn, Obama said he was flattered "that one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world started attacking me the day after I announced" for president.
Howard's standing in this debate derives from the fact that Australia once again has troops deployed with U.S. forces in a war zone - as it did in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and Somalia.
Indeed, the notion that Howard is no more than "one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world" stunningly understates a political, economic and security relationship that extends back to the 19th century - and obtains to this day.
That Obama doesn't already know this - and respect it - gives deeper meaning to the term "not ready for prime time."
But it gets worse. .................

How can this be? Barak Hussein says he's an expert in foreign affairs because he lived overseas for a few years as a child.
He's a child. Trying to be "cool" with his casual lingo. When he referred to PM Howard as "Bush's ally", instead of a US ally, I thought, "oh man he really is a lightweight".
Watching him on 60min was more evidence of his silliness and now this?? The guy is not serious. Just wants to be.
People today think they can BE something without BECOMING it thru experience and hardwork.
He's over.
Gore couldn't win his own State.
He's trying to quit smoking. He just substituted his foot for a KOOL.
Obama has an ego second to none. He is quite arrogant and condescending. He will fail as a leader if elected.
I am a black woman, in my thirties and have never been a politician -but even I know that Australia has had our back in just about every major war we have been in. Australia is America's ally not just George Bush's. Sorry Obama, I won't be voting for ya'.
They need a foot puller to get it out first.
A dirty, non-articulate, intellectually-challenged, biracial, anti-American leftist.
No, I think that words are Obama's, they have the same selfish, immature attitude that pervades Obama's whole outlook. It's the same attitude that led him to warn Maureen Dowd not to make fun of his ears. He thinks that he is some kind of god.
I keep telling people that Obama is trying to be the next Marjoe. Take a look at the old Marjoe documentary and you'll see what I mean.
I think that I just said the same thing to Rummyfan.
Obama is trying to be the new Marjoe.
I guess he picked a bad week to give up smoking.
Obama could have easily avoided this by saying something to the effect that Mr. Howard is entitled to his opinion, but the American people will decide who their next President is and yada-yada-yada. That would have been the smart and mature way to deal with it.
Instead, he had to treat one of our greatest allies in the world like he would an opponent on the campaign trail, and that "chickenhawk" play he made is a direct slap in the face to the Australian military and the people of Australia, who have suffered significant losses of their own to Muslim terrorism.
This is a Daley / Clinton combined operation.
He is already her VP candidate !
Strong Doc
I guess he picked a bad week to give up smoking.

Should have waited for next week
............... lent.
Obama's candidacy is circling the bowl now.
Barack, you need to reach up and juggle the lever just a bit, then one more big flush should put your presidential aspirations down the drain for good.
Even before Obama became official, it was obvious they'd need a blocking fullback for Hiliary. It was just a matter of who'd be interesting enough.
Just breathtaking. Biden steps on his, undoubtedly clean, wienie, the limp wrist from North Carolina employs anti-Christian bloggers, and Osama attacks one of our staunchest allies. Hitlery's handlers are paying close attention to assure they have her carefully scripted. Should be a shoo in for her.
