Culture Warrior (Don't write off Giuliani's appeal to social conservatives)
Wall Street Journal ^ | Februrary 13, 2007 | BRENDAN MINITER

Posted on 02/12/2007 9:43:49 PM PST by RWR8189

The book on Rudy Giuliani is that he is too liberal on social issues to win the Republican presidential nomination. Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, put it succinctly: "I don't see anyone getting the Republican nomination who is not pro-life and a staunch defender of traditional marriage."

But Mr. Giuliani is running strong in Iowa and New Hampshire polls and leading most national surveys of Republicans. He's charming crowds of conservatives everywhere he goes. So it's worth wondering if Mr. Perkins is missing an undercurrent coursing through conservative politics.

Republicans have just experienced a bruising midterm election defeat. The president is suffering dismal approval ratings, and its erstwhile front-runner for the presidential nomination, Sen. John McCain, made his national reputation as a "maverick." The Giuliani rise evident now may be more than name recognition and residual support from his stalwart leadership following the Sept. 11 attacks. Mr. Giuliani's support may also arise from his having successfully moved an entrenched political culture in New York City, something national Republicans have not been able to do in Washington.

No, I don't do links...wanna be my link man? :-)

I DO post facts; there's no ifs, ands, or buts about that; unlike many others who post their own delusions as though they were fact.

Do you have a point? If so, come out with it; don't be coy.

If I wouldn't support Rudy, why would I support his twin Hillary? They are alike on most issues.

I can't understand why anyone would vote for a post menopausal woman, or a drag queen... Has Rudy had a hysterectomy yet?

Maybe he's a post menopausal drag queen.

I don't live in NY but from what I've learned from visiting relatives and watching politics from a distance, Rudy cannot beat Shrillary in that state. Assuming I am right the odds of him beating her in the national election are very long - perhaps unprecedented. It makes me unsettled to have so much riding on how well Rudy will do with people in NY that have never credited him for any of his accomplishments.

If Giuliani does succeed in hijacking the (what would be formerly) Grand Old Party, they're going to need a new symbol.

I propose the following:

Well then Rudy v. Hillary would essentially boil down to NY voters. Scary.

There is nothing to refute. And my laughing has to do with you being a first class joke. You keep running at the mouth, posting all sorts of nonsense about Rudy. I gave you an EXTENSIVE list of items that conservatives will judge the GOP candidates on when it comes time to vote in the primaries. Not one of those major social issues does Rudy support.

NYCity had lots of problems that were unique to the Big Apple only. But they weren't major social issues that effect the whole nation. 70% of NYCity voters are registered Democrats. They don't give a rats arse about social issues. They don't care about stopping abortion, allowing more gun rights, less gay rights or stopping illegals from entering the US. Who do you think elected Rudy twice? Republicans? Conservatives? NO! Liberal Democrats ellected Rudy twice, and if he hadn't performed satisfactory during his first term, he wouldn't have been reelected.

Rudy did a good job as Mayor by NYCity standards. Not by conservative standards and for good reason. Rudy is no conservative.

>>>>>You conveniently ignore the other social issues that Rudy championed, such as ..... making Times Square suitable for tourists ...

You're not paying attention. I gave him credit for cleaning up Times Square. What do you want. I'm not gonna be holding up Rudy as the savior of the GOP. That's your job.

"That's been the mantra on every Rudy thread"

That's because it's true.

Oh, and I guess your "in the know"?

Who do you think it will be, then?

Don't just say who it that you are favoring; give it some thought and analyze the situation, before giving me a name.

I guess your name is true then .. because your language is truly that of a "baby".

And .. for whatever it's worth .. you sound like a classic liberal. Sorry .. "baby" .. your words give you away!

That's a good point, though an even more important point is that there are several tens of millions of pro-family, pro-life, pro-gun conservatives who will NEVER cast a ballot for him. Ever.

Take this to the bank: The nomination of Rudolph Giuliani spells the end of the Republican coalition. Kaput.

I haven't yet begun to fight; let alone "run out of arguments". OTOH, it appears that you ran out of any debate points long ago! Getting help from road kill, are you?

Yeah, we know. Liberals never shut up, no matter how much of a spectacle they make of themselves.

I like it. Upside down, it almost looks like a 'rino'--maybe with a little modification from photoshop!

This country just does NOT NEED TWO POLITICAL PARTIES TO THE LEFT OF CENTER!!

"Then you must be one of those so far off to the right that you're about to fall over the cliff."

If being pro-life, pro-gun, anti-gay and anti-open border makes me the far right, so be it.

True - they don't even know who they are or where they stand. They are for " someone ' who doesn't exist.

Good grief........are you insinuating that I asked you to be my "friend"? And I'm not the one who is even anywhere near selling out MY country. If anyone is guilty of that, it would be you.

So, EV, how long before you make the THIRD pronouncement that you are leaving the GOP?

You did what?

Changing the focus off of what you posted says alot.

Speak English.

Repeat - Law abiding citizens are NOT criminals.

I'll try to speak s-l-o-w-e-r this time...Gungrabbers like Giuliani don't get the criminal lawbreaker's guns...they're criminal lawbreakers. They only steal the God-given unalienable rights of God-fearing law-abiding citizens.
