WASHINGTON - Republican Mitt Romney's choice of a museum honoring auto pioneer Henry Ford as the site of his presidential announcement was strongly criticized Monday by Jewish Democrats, who noted Ford's history of anti-Semitism.
The former Massachusetts governor, who is scheduled to formally launch his presidential candidacy from the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit on Tuesday, was taken to task by The National Jewish Democratic Council.
The council "is deeply troubled by Governor Romney's choice of locations to announce his Presidential campaign," executive director Ira Forman said in a statement.
"Romney has been traveling the country talking about inclusiveness and understanding of people from all walks of life," Forman said. "Yet he chooses to kick (off) his presidential campaign on the former estate of a well-known and outspoken anti-Semite and xenophobe."
Forman said Romney's "embrace of Henry Ford and association of Ford's legacy with his presidential campaign raises serious questions about either the sincerity of Romney's words or his understanding of basic American history."
Ford was bestowed with the Grand Service Cross of the Supreme Order of the German Eagle by Adolph Hitler
Eric Fehrnstrom, a spokesman for Romney, said the candidate will go ahead with his announcement as planned.
"Governor Romney believes our country needs to put innovation at the forefront if we are to ensure a stronger, safer and more prosperous America," Fehrnstrom said. "The Ford Museum embodies that bold, innovative spirit."
Fehrnstrom noted that other political leaders have praised Ford in the past, including former President Bill Clinton.
How many people knew this about Ford? I sure didn't.
The MSM is going to be going after Republicans worse than ever.
I remember when Clinton gave Fulbright the Presidential Medal of Freedom and called him his mentor and praised him. The MSM was largely silent about Fulbright's segregationist past.
Yeesh, what a reach.
This is just plain silly.
Of course, old Joe Kennedy directly supported Hitler, but who's counting?
Anyone else notice that the media has focused their attacks on Romney
Associated Press hit piece.
The National Jewish Democratic Council has invited Jimmy Carter to be their Honorary Grand Poobah.
The MSM has more acute RINOdar than we. Real RINO's don't get rinky-dink MSM hit pieces such as this. This proves that the MSM believes Romney is a conservative, and therefore must be roughed up.
It is a fairly well known thing...no criticism to you intended. However, if we discarded everyone's accomplishments due to a character flaw we wouldn't have anyone to honor. I put this in line with I can admire the work and accomplishments of a homosexual without needing to know they are one. And even if I find out they are does it really take away from the work I admired them for to begin with. Doesn't mean I agree with their views.
The media will beat on this 'til Romney is politcally dead.
Meanwhile the notoriously antisemitic Dems ala Carter and Co. get a pass.
More symbolism over substance.
That should read: The council "is deeply disturbed..." Mentally unbalanced would be another appropriate substitution.
How's about we point out that the council's offices are located on "stolen" Indian lands?
Are there any Jewish Democrats who own a Ford, a Lincoln, a Mercury, etc. ?
It's been known for years -- at least since my history classes in college (circa. 1969-70). Ford didn't exactly have clean hands in De Fuhrer's Reign of Terror. Seems he sent a few bucks Hitler's way (See book: "Who Financed Hitler?") Sorry if you missed that major revelation in the 70's, but you live long enough, keep your memory and you hear and see it all. I didn't have the time to research beyond reading the book, so can't say if premise is true, or not. Many Jews say it is. I'd hang my hat more on Romney's relationship with Bibi Netenyahu and forget that Henry Ford (who died many years ago) may have had a yen for fascism.
